Upcoming Emzin seminar on visual communication in Ljubljana

Ljubljana (Slovenia) - On 15-16 November 2011, International Design Media Network (IDMN) member Emzin hosts a seminar on visual communication with four presentations over two days at the City Museum of Ljubljana.
Dutch graphic designer Max Kisman and London designer, professor and critic Nick Bell present on Tuesday 15 November.
In the lecture titled 'The complexity of simplicity,' Max Kisman talks about how he eliminates unnecessary and useless elements through his approach to work and how he distracts from the visual form through a clear and powerful message.
Despite the accelerated migration to digital media communication spaces, Nick Bell discusses the reinvigorated fascination for the experimental, experiential, physical event - doing it for real. He argues for the psychological upheaval of shifting from the tangible to the virtual and the resultant draw to what can be touched, felt and smelled.
On Wednesday 16 November, freelance designer and lecturer Niels Schrader presents, followed by designer, lecturer and president of Art Directors club in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bojan Hadzihalilovic.
Niels Schrader speaks about the dual roles of mediator and designer, he has when working. The role of mediator provides insight into the complex processes of information exchange and storage while exposing technical operations of media systems.
Bojan Hadzihalilovic's lecture 'Design or die' is a story of postcards and posters created during the siege of Sarajevo in 1992-1995. The city underwent the most terrible urbicide and the longest siege in the second half of the 20 century. The lecture presents the time in which the postcards were designed and the echo they provoked around the world.
The seminar will take place 15-16 November 2011 in the City Museum of Ljubljana, Gosposka 15, Ljubljana, between 9.30 am and 5.00 pm. Lectures will be held in English and will have no simultaneous translation. The fee for the seminar is 200 EUR (VAT excluded), and 50 EUR (VAT excluded) for students.

About the speakers
Max Kisman (Netherlands) graduated from Amsterdam's Gerrit Rietveld Academie in 1977. He was an early adopter of personal computers for use in graphic design. He co-founded TYP/Typografisch Papier, an alternative magazine on typography and art. He taught graphic design and typography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, the Utrecht School of the Arts, and the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht from 1984 to 1988. He has received awards for his television graphics. He established Kinsman Studio in Amsterdam in 2005. His clients include national newspapers as De Volkskrant and Het Financieele Dagblad and various other publishers. He is a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI).
Nick Bell (United Kingdom) studied at the London College of Printing (LCP). He founded his first design practice in 1988 and is now director of Nick Bell Design. He is known for exhibition design and creative directorship of Eye magazine. Notable clients include the Science Museum, Imperial War Museum, The Wellcome Trust, V&A, Tate. He has received numerous awards in the United Kingdom and abroad and his work has been featured in exhibitions. Emigre magazine devoted an entire issue to his design, critical thinking and teaching methodology. He is now a Visiting Critic at the Royal College of Art, Special Consultant to Eye magazine and a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI).
Niels Schrader (Netherlands) studied Communication Design at the University of Applied Sciences in Düsseldorf and continued at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam. Currently he lives in Amsterdam and Düsseldorf. He worked as a freelancer for Uwe Loesch and Irma Boom and set up his own studio in Amsterdam in 2005. His portfolio of clients includes the Graphic Design Museum Breda, the Royal Academy of Visual Arts, the Goethe-Institute, the Mondriaan Foundation and the Berlage Institute. His work in computer design and digital development has received several awards international awards. Niels lectures at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and ArtEZ - Academy of Art & Design, Arnhem.
Bojan Hadþihaliloviã (Bosnia and Herzegovina) co-founded Design TRIO studio in Sarajevo, in 1985. Though able to leave Bosnia at the beginning of the war, the members of TRIO stayed in Sarajevo and called attention to the war through a series of posters 'Pozdrav iz Sarajeva.' Their work from the series was published in leading world media including The Guardian and Life Magazine. In 1989 the group expanded and renamed to Fabrika becoming a leading national agency for design, computer graphics, TV animation and communication. Bojan is a professor of graphic design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo and a guest lecturer in visual communications. He is the president of Art Directors club of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
