Good Design Award 2012

The Good Design Awards is a comprehensive program for the evaluation and encouragement of design organised by (JDP). When it was initiated in 1957 in Japan, entries were originally defined as industrial products only. However, since 2000, the categories have been expanded to include social systems, architecture, graphic signs, etc.

Recipients of Good Design Award earn the qualification to apply the G-mark to their product or design embodiment. G-mark is widely recognised in Japan, across a broad range of age groups throughout society.

Its ultimate goal is bringing to reality products and design embodiments that make our lives more comfortable, convenient and fulfilling.

Judging Committee

JDP selects the Good Design Awards Judging Committee, composed of approximately 60 designers, architects, editors, and other specialists working in the forefront of design.

Under the supervision of the Chair and the Vice Chairs, the Judging Committee shall conduct screening and render final awarding decisions while respecting the guiding philosophy of the Good Design Awards.

The prizes are as follows:

Special awards (selected among Good Design Award recipients):

• Gold Award
• Sustainable Design Award
• Good Design Award of Small and Medium Enterprises
• Good Design Award of the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry
• Grand Award

The recipients of Good Design Award can use and apply 'G-mark' for their marketing materials and packaging, quite effective to boost up the sales.

The entry must be launched for sale or use by 31 March 2013. Information regarding the award is subject to be publicly released on 1 October 2012.

No cash value will be paid for the prizes.

Notification of winners

Winners will be announced on the Good Design Award website in 1 October 2012.

Good Design Exhibition (GDE)

The Good Design awards will be presented to the public at Tokyo Big Sight (exhibition hall) 23-25 November 2012.

Good Design Yearbook

The Good Design Award publishes "Japan Design" every year. "Japan Design" is the Yearbook profiles all award winners from a particular year.

Birth of G Mark

Good Design Award winning items can promote its results by attaching "G Mark".

"G Mark" was designed in 1957 when the Good Design Products Selection System (the predecessor of Good Design Awards) was started. It was designed by Mr. Yusaku Kamekura, a designer who left a major mark on the Japanese design history. Since then the "G Mark" has been familiar to many people as a trustworthy symbol which connects industry and everyday life just like its system "G Mark" system.
