Singapore – The President of Singapore and the new patron of SingaporeÂ’s top design award, Dr Tony Tan, bestowed the honours to 12 designers and designs at the PresidentÂ’s Design Award ceremony on 10 November. This award is the highest accolade conferred to an individual or organisation in the field of design in Singapore. It honours the achievements and contributions of designers and designs that have made a difference to the lives of Singaporeans and to the larger global community.

“A good diversity of design projects were represented in this yearÂ’s award.  The projects display great breadth: from a mega-complex that provides a dynamic setting for vibrant public life, to a tiny component concealed within home appliances.  The range of works that received recognition is testament to how much design can improve our lives,” said Mr Robert Tomlin, Chairman, PresidentÂ’s Design Award Steering Committee and Chairman, DesignSingapore Council.

Mr Ng Lang, Chief Executive Officer, Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) said, “In striving to create liveable cities, quality architecture and urban design complement sound urban planning to address new challenges in sustainable development and lifestyle needs. I am happy to note that we are seeing a higher quality of architectural design works over the years. We need to continue to push up the level of quality designs in Singapore. This yearÂ’s recipients are a testament of the high level of design we want to encourage. Their works inspire us as individuals and bond us together with their creations of delightful public spaces. I am excited about the future of SingaporeÂ’s architecture and urban design.”

“Design-driven innovation is possible when designers adopt a user-centric approach throughout the entire creation process.  By making detailed observations of the users in context, gathering and incorporating user insights into every part of the value chain, businesses are able to generate new value for their customers and can access previously untapped markets.  The recipients of the PresidentÂ’s Design Award are role models who have attained high standards in what they do by keeping this laser focus on their users,” said Mr Jeffrey Ho, Executive Director, DesignSingapore Council.

Administered by the DesignSingapore Council of the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts, and the Urban Redevelopment Authority, the award has two categories – Designer of the Year andDesign of the Year. Two individuals and 10 designs have been conferred the respective awards this year.
