Adelaide (Australia) - Sydney-based designer Mark Gowing has become the first ever Australian to win the Gold Medal at the prestigious Warsaw International Poster Biennale. Announced at a reception in Warsaw on Saturday, 7 June, Mark Gowing's poster "Oil Kills Peace" was awarded the prestigious Gold Medal in the category Ideological Posters. The only other Australian to ever win an award at the Biennale was Garry Emery who received a Bronze Medal in 1996.

The was created in 1966, as the first Biennale to celebrate the achievements in the field of poster art. Winning the highest acclaim among critics and graphic designers, the Biennale has grown into the most important and prestigious artistic event of its type in the world. For over four decades, the finest names have been connected with it as participants, laureates, jurors and friends, and it has become the most important meeting place for international graphic design. The Biennale aims to better the understanding of forms of expression in modern poster design and shows the poster flourishing in exciting new ways.

Mark Gowing runs his own design studio in Sydney with clients including Hopscotch Films, Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation, The Powerhouse Museum, The Weather Channel, Glen Street Theatre, NRMA, Revolver Film, Inertia Music, Harper Collins, Pan McMillan and Preservation Music. In recent years he has won several AGDA Awards including two Pinnacle Awards in 2006, five Gold Awards in this year's Graphis Poster Annual and a Typographic Excellence Award in 2007 from the New York Type Directors Club. Mark Gowing Design is a communications studio that values the power of ideas and is dedicated to engaging design that not only communicates efficiently but also emotionally.

The Warsaw International Poster Biennale is endorsed by the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (Icograda). Since 1994 the Poster Museum at Wilanow in Warsaw has been a regular base for the Biennale, which was the first museum in the world to begin a collection of posters.

Previous winners of awards at the International Poster Biennale have included such esteemed designers and graphic artists as Stefan Sagmeister, Andy Warhol, Ikko Tanaka, Henryk Tomaszewski, Paul Davis, Wim Crouwel, Milton Glaser, Makoto Saito, Grapus, Uwe Loesch, Michel Quarez, Paula Scher, Shigeo Fukuda and Pierre Mendell.

This year's 21st Warsaw International Poster Biennale received 3068 posters from 57 different countries submitted for competition, across three professional categories:

a) Ideological
b) Culture
c) Advertising

The Qualifying Committee then selected 523 posters to partake in the Competitive Exhibition of the 21st Warsaw International Poster Biennale. The prize winning entries are posted online. The Jury of the 21st International Poster Biennale comprised of Uwe Loesch (Germany), Anette Lenz (France), Jianping He (Germany), Xavier Bermuduz (Mexico), Tomasz Boguslwski (Poland) and Marcin Wladyka (Poland).
