Copenhagen (Denmark) - Official delegates from 8 European nations have met for two days in Copenhagen, Denmark to share information regarding the state of the graphic design and visual communication profession in their countries. Members of the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (Icograda) presented reports and joined in open exchange. This unique meeting represented the first time in many years that graphic design associations from these nations have met formally to compare opportunities and challenges related to design and visual communication.

Associations from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Italy and Lithuania met at the impressive new Danish Design Centre. Spirited discussion took place regarding the state of the graphic design profession. Associations shared experiences and success stories on a variety of subjects such as multidisciplinary collaboration, fee-estimate models, copyright protection and reproduction rights, and standardized guidelines for international competitions and award schemes. David Grossman, President of Icograda, noted that Regional meetings such as this are unique opportunities for the design communities of the world to build bridges and work in concert.

The Danish Design Centre (DDC), one of two Icograda members in Denmark, has a 20 year history of developing design awareness, and is seen as a leading promotional organization. It publishes books on design, offers meeting and conference facilities, and organizes exhibits and conferences. Jens Bernsen, DDC's Director, says "It's good to see an international organization such as Icograda using our facility. After all, we built this centre as a meeting place to stimulate exchange."

Participants of the Icograda Regional Meeting expressed their desire to continue the exchange, and more formal meetings will be announced in the near future. Associations from the Nordic region are also working on a joint bid for a multidisciplinary Global Design Congress in Scandinavia in 2005.

Icograda organizes Regional Meetings of design associations in conjunction with Congresses, Conferences, and Board Meetings around the world. Icograda is the representative international organization for graphic design and visual communication, with 67 member associations in 43 countries worldwide. Founded in London in 1963, Icograda holds consultative status with UNESCO, UNIDO, and the Council of Europe.
