Montreal (Canada) - The will meet in Buenos Aires, Argentina from 19-20 February 2011. The meeting marks the first occasion for the international board to meet in Argentina since 1996. It is being hosted by the Centro Metropolitano de Diseno (CMD) which was inaugurated at the Buenos Aires International Design Festival in October 2010.

"We welcome the opportunity to build closer ties with the Argentinian design community," says Russell Kennedy, Icograda President. "As a UNESCO City of Design, Buenos Aires' design culture has an international reputation."

Along with a two-day meeting of the board, the four-day schedule includes meetings with key officials who oversee Buenos Aires' UNESCO programming, officials from the Centro Metropolitano de Diseno to learn more about the current creative industries policy, a session with the design community to present Icograda and its current projects and programming, and studio tours.

Founded in 2001, CMD works to integrate design in Buenos Aires's small and medium enterprises to promote innovation and development. Its goals include:
  • to support and stimulate private and public design initiatives that take place within the city of Buenos Aires
  • to promote the internationalisation of the area;
  • support to local entrepreneurs who aim to develop design driven companies through incubation and links to other organisms;
  • co-operation in the expansion of a national design net with centres, institutions, NGO, etc.;
  • stimulation and co-ordination of the relationship between designers, entrepreneurs, executives, head hunters, directors of governing bodies;
  • promoting design management.
"Icograda has strong individual ties with designers in Buenos Aires, such as Ronald Shakespear," says Kennedy. "We are looking forward to expanding these, creating new networks, and promoting a deeper awareness of communication design and its potential as a strategic development tool through our visit to Argentina."

Buenos Aires was designated as UNESCO's first City of Design in 2005.
