Istanbul (Turkey) - Hong Kong was a British colony for over 150 years before its reunification with China in 1997 and the convergence between the East and West continuously progressed to the multicultural Hong Kong of today. Consequently, the amalgam of indigenous, colonial and globalised cultures have provided the local design community with diversified yet unique contemporary creative reference framework.

Hon Bing-wah's presentation at the 'Building Bridges' semainar in Istanbul (Turkey) will focus on the diversity of identity influences that exemplifies the development of Hong Kong's design bearing and will address issues related to diversity as well as providing a glimpse of some successful and unique approaches that manages to marry cultural and commercial perspectives in this cosmopolitan society.

Hon Bing-wah became involved in design after receiving his academic qualification in design in 1972 from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In the past years, he has received the Gold Award of the Hong Kong Designers Association, the Creativity Gold Medal Award, USA, and China CIS Yearbook Gold Award. His poster works were selected at the Warsaw Poster Biennial, Lahti Poster Biennale, Poster Show in Toyama, Japan, and Korea International Poster Biennale. Hon was one of the co-founders of Hong Kong Chingying Institute of Visual Arts, and the principal from 1984 to 1994. He is also a visiting professor of the University of Shanghai.

About the Icograda Design Week in Istanbul:
The two-day 'Building Bridges' seminar is part of the Icograda Design Week in Istanbul (Turkey), from 27 to 31 January 2004.
Held on 30 and 31 January, this seminar is free of charge but registration is requested. Seats will be given on a 'first come, first served' basis. It will bring together designers from Australia, Bosnia/Herzegovina, Brazil, Canada, China (Hong Kong), Denmark, Great Britain, Greece, Iran, Israel, Lebanon, Russia, South Korea and Turkey to share their experiences and influences from their own regions. The seminar will showcase new perspectives on the diversity of graphic design today.
