Montreal (Canada) - The inaugural IDA Congress will be a unique gathering of thought leadership exploring the intersection between design and five key sectors of global relevance: economic development, the Internet, biotechnology, urbanism and international migration. More than 3000 delegates are expected to gather from 24-26 October 2011 at the Taipei International Convention Center (TICC).

The Congress theme - Design at the Edges - was selected to highlight the edges between design practice and other fields having a stake in design; the blurring of the boundaries between the design disciplines, as well as their unique attributes; and 'cutting edge' work ?and ideas – thinking that pushes the boundaries of all disciplines.

Exceptional savings for a limited time

A 60% discounted rate of TWD $8600 TWD (approx. USD $295 / EUR €220) is being offered until 31 March 2011. Limited tickets are available on a first come, first served basis for students at TWD $6500 (approx. USD $225/ EUR €165). Early bird registration includes a three day Congress Pass, lunch, Congress kit and admission to the Welcome Party, Culture Night and Taipei Night social events. Detailed information on registration, including preferred hotel rates and travel partners, is available online.

"We are proud that the IDA Partners will come together in what will surely be a landmark event for the international design community," says Dr. Mark Breitenberg, Icsid President and Chair of the Programme Committee. "Through this unique programming developed with our host organiser, Taiwan Design Center, we aim to create a dialogue that will demonstrate design's potential to improve quality of life throughout the world."

A focus on interdisciplinary discussion

Five keynote addresses by invited international experts will introduce leading-edge thinking on the topic areas over the course of three mornings. Each address will be responded to by a panel of designers representing the disciplines of industrial, communications and interior architecture/design to promote the value of design and explore design-led approaches as an enabler of innovation in sectors of global relevance. Keynote and panelist announcements will be forthcoming.

"The IDA Congress is a key platform for global advocacy that realises our vision of the design community working together for a world that is balanced, inclusive and sustainable," says Russell Kennedy, Icograda President and Programme Committee member.

"The first of its kind, this Congress will be a truly interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary undertaking; maintaining relevance to each of the IDA partner disciplines whilst encouraging and initiating ideas that take us into the 21st century," concludes Shashi Caan, IFI President and Programme Committee member.

Afternoon parallel sessions offer an in depth exploration of the Congress theme – including interactive design salons, regional reports, professional practice sessions, opportunities for exchange between young designers and an academic track of refereed papers, concluding ?with an education symposium. 'Design Explorations' offers guided tours of Taipei and the exhibitions of the 2011 Taipei International Design Expo, a parallel Congress event organised by Taiwan Design Center.

Three social events will showcase key Taipei cultural attractions, including the National Palace Museum the Expo Dome and the National Chiang Kai-shek Cultural Center. Pre-Congress events include a Young Designers' Workshop series for Taiwanese and international design students, hosted and organised by TDC and the Government of Taiwan as parallel event.

Congress brings Taiwanese design sector together

Taipei was ratified in 2007 as the IDA Congress host city after an international competitive bid process. The Taiwan Design Center (TDC) leads the Congress organisation, in partnership with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Taipei City Government. Established in 2003, the Taiwan Design Center is as an integrated platform to promote international design exchange, help enterprise build their own brand, and tell the world that the era of "Designed in Taiwan" has come. Members from seven major design organisations and associations representing industrial design, interior design, communication design and design promotion have come together to form the Taiwan Design Alliance and actively support the Congress organisation as a platform to advance Taiwanese design in a global context.
