RSA announces Student Design Awards call for entries

London (United Kingdom) - The Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) has announced the Student Design Awards briefs for the 2010/2011 award scheme. The RSA Student Design Awards scheme challenges professional designers-in-training to apply their skills to difficult social issues.
Participation in the Student Design Awards is open to both current undergraduate and postgraduate students and to those who graduated in summer 2010. The deadline for submission of entry forms, fees and work is 17 February 2011.
Since its birth as an industrial bursaries scheme in the 1920s, these awards have closely mirrored the evolution of professional design from single-discipline craftsmanship and narrowly-defined design for industry to more diffuse forms of service innovation and socially-inclusive professional practice.
The project briefs for the 2010/11 award scheme are divided into the following categories.
The RSA appoints a different judging panel for each Student Design Awards project, usually comprising a chair selected from the RSA Advisory Board or the Faculty of Royal Designers for Industry, together with design professionals and other experts, design educators and representatives of the sponsoring organisations.

Creating possibilities of agreement - Modern age
How can the design of living spaces make growing old seem more attractive and inviting? - Giving and getting
Use design to evoke need and inspire generosity - Postage stamps
Inspire the nation with fashion classics and UK 'Firsts' - Action for age
Social networks as a route to positive intergenerational relationships
