Istanbul (Turkey) - Sustainability covers the following three dimensions: the social and ethical, the environmental and the economical. The essence of sustainability is to find a balance between the three elements so that people can meet their present needs within the carrying capacity of the earth in order that there are sufficient resources for future generations to meet their needs. Sustainability also seeks equity, equality and life quality for all people and not just for the few.

During her presentation at the Building Bridges seminar, Karen Blincoe will explain how is globalisation seen in this context? As a barrier - or gateway to sustainable development? Visual communication plays a mayor part in the globalisation process through its ability to sell, to persuade and inform.

Karen Blincoe is Director and Founder of ICIS, the International Centre for Creativity, Innovation and Sustainability. Chairman of the Educational Council for the Arts, Architecture, Design and Conservation for the Ministry of Culture, Denmark. Recently appointed visiting Professor at the University of Brighton.

She is Danish and educated in graphic design in England. She established KB Design (graphic design consultancy) in London 1984 and O2 UK in 1990 (environmental design). She was Head of the Department for Visual Communication at Danmarks Designskole, Copenhagen, 1991-1998.
She has won many awards both for her design and she recently received the Danish Design Vision 2002 Award for her work with ICIS. Karen also lectures, teaches and writes internationally on subjects relating to visual communication, design education, csr and sustainable development.
