Russell Bevers is an experienced designer having designed for the areas of print, press, packaging and exhibitions. He began his own design practice in 1982, Russell Bevers Design, in Melbourne and developed a significant reputation in the corporate, entertainment and education areas. Later he merged the business with Rankin Design Group, becoming a Director of Rankin Bevers Associates. The business became The Swish Croup in 1999; a multi discipline public company specialising in multi media design- Russell assumed the role of Graphic Design Director. In 2001 Russell joined RMIT University as Course Co-ordinator of the Master of Design program-on line, with-in the Faculty of Art Design and Communication.

Bevers is a Fellow of the Design Institute of Australia. past President of the Australian Graphic Design Association and was Treasurer Icograda from 1999-2001.

Ruth Johannsen was an Icograda Next Generation Representative from 1993-1995.

(1946-2020) Rita was the General Manager/Executive Director of ICoD Member AGDA (Australian Graphic Design Association) from 1999 to 2013, where she worked to develop design as a contributor to innovation, culture and commerce. She served as a design advocate to government bodies and training councils, sitting on the advisory board of the University of South Australia School of Art, Architecture and Design, acting as adjunct in their undergraduate and postgraduate communication design programs.

Having won numerous awards, including the AADC’s Hall of Fame Watering Can Award and the AGDA Awards Pinnacle, Rita also established the 'Design Effectiveness' category in the AGDA Awards which focuses on celebrating measurable and client-focused graphic design. Most recently Rita acted as the Chair of the AGDA Hall of Fame committee. In AGDA President Adele Tarnawski
’s words: “AGDA simply would not be where it is today without Rita’s significant contribution, passion, and enthusiasm.”

Rita served as Chair to the inaugural ICoD Audit Committee, established in 2015, and played an important role in structuring this body for many years.

(1918-1994) Born  on 07 June 1918 in Dieppe, France, Jacques Richez was a French graphic designer, though he practiced a large part of his career in Belgium. 

Jacques Richez studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Mons. He moved to Brussels as an independent graphic designer in 1945. Founding member of the professional association of Belgian graphic designers (CBG), he represented Belgium at the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI) from 1952. Richez was known in Belgium for his theater posters and logos, such as that of the Générale de Banque (1965) or the iris symbolizing the Brussels Region (1991). He designed the poster for the 1958 Universal Exhibition. Richez is the author of 'L’Art graphique appliqué à la Publicité' (Graphic Art applied to advertising), published in 1964 by Les Éditions Comptables, Commerciales et Financières.

(1949-) Guy-A. Schockaert was a tireless proponent of professional organisations. He was deeply engaged in professional associations in Belgium, across Europe and of course, Icograda. He was President of the Council from 1997 to 1999, serving on the Executive Board from 1993 until 2001.

Born in Courtrai, Belgium in 1949, Schockaert studied graphic arts and visual communication at the Institut Saint-Luc, Bruxelles. He became an assistant to Michel Olyff before becoming self-employed as a graphic designer in 1971. His graphic studio Ad hoc Design specialised in corporate identity, books and brochures for a range of clients including Alfac, 3M, Plantin, Sic and RTBF. He is one of the initiators of Design for the World, an organisation dedicated to finding design solutions to humanitarian problems. Schockaert, who was very deeply loved by the Icograda community and his colleagues, was known for his motto “rigour and emotion”.

Thierry Van Kerm, served as Icograda's Director from 1999 through 2005, facilitating the relocation of the Secretariat to Montreal (Canada). After graduating from studies in industrial design and management, Van Kerm established and managed a multi-disciplinary design agency. His work experience has included being a publisher and chief editor of various design magazines, the author of the book 'How to Manage (with Design),' design journalism and management consulting in design. Van Kerm has also lectured at La Cambre, the Belgian design school in Brussels, and has served as Secretary General of UDB, the former Belgian association of designers.

D. Stojannovic-Sip was Icograda Vice President from 1963 to 1966.

Ana Masut was the Director of the International Council Secretariat from 2015 to 2023. In recognition of unparalleled contribution to the organisation, the Council acknowledges her leadership in the delivery of international events, including most notably the Design Declaration Summit, in the establishing of governance documents and processes to modernise the Council’s operation as well as her dedication to the professionalisation of design and the importance of designers assuming responsibility for their design’s impacts on not only the environment but social equity and cultural integrity.  International Business and Industrial Design, and over a decade of experience managing international projects in a range of industries, Ana is an advocate for professional design practice and design as a vehicle for global change.

Judith Gregory was an Icograda Congress Liaison in 1989-1991.

(1923-2013) Walter Jungkind, born in Zurich, Switzerland, served an apprenticeship as designer/ lithographer with the publishing house Orell Fuessli AG, and studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule Zurich. After travelling and working throughout Europe he continued his studies in London in 1950, where he also practiced freelance design and consulting. 1960-68 he taught graphic design and photography at the London College of Printing and Graphic Art. In 1968 he was invited as Visiting Professor to the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, where he was instrumental in establishing the Division of Visual Communication Design and where he subsequently was promoted to Professor.

Jungkind initiated and co-designed with his colleagues a number of international design exhibitions at the University, among them 'Intergraphic; Dutch Design for Government Institutions'; 'Language made Visible'; 'Book design in Switzerland' and 'Swiss Museum Posters'; and he provided the concept for the exhibition 'Graphic Design for Public Service' at the Kunstgewerbemuseum Zurich in 1977. In 1979 he produced and hosted a series of five television programs on 'Language made visible' for CTV/ the national University of the Air.

Jungkind served on the Icograda board from 1974 to 1979 and was President from 1974 to 1977.

Jovana Milovic was the Managing Director of the ICoD Secretariat in Montréal from 2013 to 2015. Milovic steered the Secretariat through the Council's transition into a multidisciplinary body. She is passionate about community building, progressive social change, and the development of grassroots and not-for-profit organisations seeking to better the conditions of life for all.  She holds a Master's from the University of Toronto in Philosophy, as well as an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Political Theory (also from U of T).

Albert Ng, an award-winning design professor at York University, has been instrumental in the milieu of Canada’s graphic design professional accreditation and quality assurance of post-secondary design education. Albert’s students have won over four hundred international and national package design awards. He has lectured overseas, including at the National Taiwan University of Sci/Tech and Swinburne University/Australia. Albert also designs stamps, coins, branding, publications for a wide variety of clients, including Canada Post and the Royal Canadian Mint. Albert is the founding president of the Association of Registered Graphic Designers of Ontario (RGD), former VP of IcoD, former director of the Toronto Design Exchange (DX), and served 10 years as the Advisory Chair, Graphic Design Program/Sheridan College. His accolades include the Order of Ontario, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, the Chinese Canadian Legend Award, and GRAPHIS Gold, Adobe, RGD/HM eastern Canada, A' Design awards for distinguished teaching. Albert is a fellow of GDC (Society of Graphic Designers of Canada) and RGD. He is listed in the Canadian Who’s Who.

"Albert Ng has had an illustrious career in graphic design. One of Canada’s best-known designers, he led a ten-year campaign for the professional accreditation of graphic designers in Ontario. The resulting legislation caused him to become known as the “father of graphic design accreditation.” Ng founded the Association of Registered Graphic Designers of Ontario. He helped develop clearly defined standards of professional practice, quality post-secondary education programs, and a greater understanding of the important role of graphic design in business and economic success. His accreditation model was a first in North America, second worldwide, and his contributions to design have helped Ontario’s graphic designers be globally competitive."

Robert L. Peters, CGD, FGDC 

Robert is a Canadian graphic designer and founder/principal of the award-winning firm CIRCLE, the design consultancy he directed for 38 years. He is also a former president of Icograda (now ICoD, the International Council of Design); founding president of the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada, Manitoba Chapter; a foreign feature correspondent for ‘Communication Arts’ magazine (for two decades); former editor of the ‘GDC Graphic Design Journal;’ author of the book ‘Worldwide Identity’ published by Rockport; and co-author of the book ‘Natural Reflections’ published by Rocky Mountain Books.

During his six years on the Icograda board (1999–2005), the NGO was able to regain a solid financial footing, increase benefits for its member associations, substantially grow its membership base, create both education and design media networks, establish a credible online presence and information hub, coordinate a sustainable design archive (in partnership with the University of Brighton), co-organize significant design conferences worldwide (including Korea, South Africa, the Czech Republic, Turkey, India, China, Brazil, Japan, and Denmark, among others), and secure a permanent secretariat (along with expanded administrative staff) in Montreal. 

Robert has taught creative communications and design at Red River College Polytechnic, was an associate professor at the University of Manitoba’s School of Art (as well as Chair of Graphic Design); was the recipient of the Koopman Distinguished Chair in the Visual Arts from the Hartford School of Art, University of Hartford; and served as Designer in Residence in the Visual Communication Design Department, Monash University, in Melbourne, Australia.

Robert was raised as a TCK and schooled in Germany, Switzerland, and England. He has traveled extensively (more than 60 countries). For 35 years he lived in Solace House, the low-energy passive solar house that he designed and built in the woods of eastern Manitoba. When not immersed in art, design, or activism, he enjoys nature, mountaineering, and human-powered outdoor activities.

Though retired from design practice in 2014, Robert remains active internationally as a consultant and design strategist, policy advisor, mentor, writer, juror, and guest lecturer. He embraces each day as a humanist and lifelong environmentalist…

Brenda is an association executive and designer living and working in Montréal. Currently the executive Director of the Interaction Design Association (IxDA), she was previously Managing Director of ico-D from 2005-2012.

Since 2005, Brenda has worked in more than 25 countries—bridging cultures, language and timezones to use design for progressive change. Her work for Nova Scotia Tourism was twice awarded the Canadian Advertising Campaign of the Year and she has received the Kenneth R Wilson award from the Canadian Business Press. She designed Canada's identity for Expo 2000.

Brenda is a member of the Mandela Poster Project Collective (MPP), a founding board member of Data Interoperability Standards Consortium (DISC) and an avid runner.

(1933-2020) Yu Bingnan taught in the Department of Visual Communication Design of the Tsinghua University, Academy of Arts and Design and was Icograda’s first Chinese Board Member, acting as Vice President from 2001-2003.

Known for his extraordinary research and knowledge creation in book arts, including typography, font design, and book layout design, Yu Bingnan comingled Chinese and European methodologies, laying the groundwork for the development of modern graphic design in China. After China’s reform and opening up, Yu Bingnan promoted Chinese design processes internationally; in 1989, becoming the first person in Asia to receive the German Gutenberg Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding achievements and contributions in the field of graphic design and education.

Yu Bingnan has been praised by international colleagues for fostering exchange through lectures, congresses and exhibitions between Chinese design and the world. Through his efforts, organised the Icograda Design Perspectives seminar and logo2002: Identity and Communication Conference held in Beijing in 2002, which connected various international design stakeholders interested in seeding the formation of new professional associations. Led by Yu Bingnan’s facilitation, China hosted the 2004 AGI Beijing Conference, held by the Academy of Fine Arts of Tsinghua University, in addition to XIN: Icograda World Design Congress in Beijing in 2009. This was the last dedicated Icograda Congress and was attended by 1 750 delegates from 48 countries.

Ge Lui is a partner at Top-Point Brand Design Corporation, an agency that has contributed to the brand development of many Chinese companies. Liu is active and dedicated to helping introduce companies from outside China to the Chinese market. Under his direction, the company has won many awards nationally and internationally. 

Xiao Yong is a renowned graphic designer and design educator, currently a professor at Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, China and a visiting professor at University of Arts London. He also serves as a Board member of CUMULUS and is a member of the Global Agenda Council on Design. He has taught and lectured in 300 universities in over 50 countries. From 2001-2003, he served as the Chief Editor of Art and Design Magazine . Xiao Yong studied in Finland, Germany and Denmark from 1991-1995, receiving his MA from University of Art and Design Helsinki in 1994. He has been a speaker in many international conferences including the World Economic Forum and was designated as one of the “Top 10 Chinese designers” in 2007. XiaoYong Design is recognised as one of the most influential design firms in China. He designed the medals for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and his work has been featured in design annuals and magazines internationally. Xiao Yong believes design plays an important role in the creative economy - it should create and add value to our society. For a sustainable future, he believes that we should enhance design awareness, especially in developing countries, and that closer global collaboration in design is needed.

Iva graduated graphic design at the Universitaet fuer Angewante Kunst in Vienna in 1996. She is Creative Director with extensive experience in advertising, magazine layout and concept, photography, design systems and book cover design.

She spent 10 years serving on the ICoD Executive Board and was the President from 2013 to 2015.

After a long career in advertising, Iva opened her own company - Babaja Branding and Design Consultancy inc. in Zagreb, Croatia in 2017. She has given lectures and exhibited all around the world and her work has been published internationally.

Iva is deeply passionate in advocating design and promoting the designers' role as agents of social change, fighting against discrimination and social inequality for a better world.

Arne Andersen was Icograda Vice President from 1972 to 1974.

Gitte Just is CEO of the Danish Design Association. The keywords of Gitte's career are: Management, strategic planning, negotiations, development of partnerships, and design of processes, development of business concepts and projects, and coaching. She has been responsible for more than 50 large events within culture, business, music and film. Now Gitte heads the Danish Design Association (DDA) which is a professional membership association for Danish design companies. The mission is to advance growth, the exchange of information and ideas and to professionalise and internationalise the Danish design profession. Prior to her position with the DDA, Gitte worked for the UN's Conference on Women/NGO Forum on Women 95 Beijing and as head of office and program for UN's World Social Summit/NGO Forum 95. She joined served as program manager for Copenhagen, Cultural Capital of Europe and continued on to Øksnehallen as Head of Program. Before joining Danish Design Association, Gitte led her own company specialising in development of business concepts, process design, and project design and coaching. Apart from being a member of the board of Icograda, Gitte is also a member of the board of the Danish Consortium of Design and Architecture, of the Danish Government’s advisory board on design, of INDEX:’s advisory board, and she is the chairman of the recruitment panel at the University of Southern Denmark.

Born in South Africa, Mervyn Kurlansky trained in London, then practiced with Knoll International and Crosby/Fletcher/Forbes before co-founding Pentagram in 1972. Since 1993 Kurlansky has lived and worked in Denmark. A prolific designer, consultant, author, lecturer, and juror, Kurlansky is a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers, the International Society of Typographic Designers, the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufacture & Commerce and a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale and Dansk Designerer. Kurlansky's work has been widely published, has won many international awards, and is in numerous permanent collections around the world. Kurlansky was chairman of the Icograda London Design Seminar from 1996 to 1999. In 2001, Graphis published a book created by Kurlansky entitled 'Masters of the 20th Century: The Icograda Design Hall of Fame', which depicts the work of more than 100 leading international graphic designers who spoke at the Seminars between 1974 and 1999. Kurlansky joined the Icograda Executive Board at the 19th Icograda General Assembly in Johannesburg, South Africa in September 2001 as President Elect. He was President from 2003 to 2005.

(1925- 2011) Heikki Juhani (Jukka) Pellinen was born on 15 May 1925 in Helsinki. After the second war, Pellinen studied at the University of Art and Design Helsinki and then abroad. He worked in the advertising department of several large Finnish companies until he founded his own office in 1966. In addition to his work, he taught at the School of Advertising Graphics, the Institute of Marketing and the School of Art and Design. He was Professor of Visual Communication at the University of Art and Design Helsinki from 1982 to 1990.

Pellinen was known as a graphic designer and industrial designer but he also worked as a fashion designer. His output was diverse, ranging from fashion for the brand Kuusinen and Turo, to heavy industry, such as a Valmet (tractors), Terhi (outboard motors), Högfors (electric heaters), this during a time that industrial design was somewhat unknown in Finland.

Pellinen was an Executive Board member of the Council from 1979 to 1981 and Icograda Vice President from 1963 to 1966.

Peter Kneebone had the original idea for Icograda and was Icograda President from 1979 to 1981. He also served on the Icograda board as Vice President (1974-1977), Secretary General (1977-1979) and as the Liaison to UNESCO. He was also Vice President of the Chartered Society of Designers of Britain and Vice President of the French Syndicat National des Graphistes. He worked as a graphic designer and illustrator for major corporate and government agencies and publishers. He wrote a book on environmental communication 'Signaletique' and contributed to many international publications. Kneebone was Head of Complementary Studies at Kingston School of Art, Coordinator of Post-graduate Studies at the Central School of Art and Design (London) and Course Tutor at the University of Paris 7. He taught at Parsons School of Design (Paris) and at the Ecole Nationale ds Beaux-Arts (Nancy). He was also External Examiner for the London College of Printing. He lectured widely in Europe, North America, Latin America and Africa and served on many international design juries.

Sali Sasaki is a creative consultant working at the intersection of communication design, cultural development and social change. Since 2009, she has been focusing on the creative potential of local knowledge in the global era while collaborating with organizations that support cultural regeneration and design education in East Asia.

Rudolf Gruettner served as Icograda Vice President from 1974 to 1979.

Professor honoris causa, multi: 2008 honored by the Nagoya University of Arts (Japan): "In recognition and appreciation of your international brilliant achievement in the field of design and of the important contribution to design education at the Nagoya University of Arts."  Helmut Langer is the first German designer to receive such an honor from any Japanese University. 2018 by the University San Ignacio de Loyola, Lima, Peru: "For his outstanding career, which made him an important visual designer for sustainability and global communication of today."

Jury member at many int. design competitions. Speaker at many int. design conventions around the world. Curator of outstanding global environmental design projects and exhibitions – milestones for global networking, e.g. OCEAN POSTERS against plastic pollution – an international students' poster design project with 35 universities of all continents, specially recognised on the United Nations World Oceans Day website.. Design works are published worldwide and highly marked with many awards and prizes. Helmut was appointed as Advisor to the Japan Design Foundation 1991, the International Design Centre Nagoya (IdcN), 1991, the European Commission, 1991-1996, and the Design Promotion Center in Taipeh, 1991-1992.

Honorary member of the  Biennial of Graphic Design Brno, Czech Republic, the International Poster Biennial Mexico, and the International Poster Design Council BICeBé, Bolivia.

Kurt Weidemann was born in 1922 in Eichemedien, Germany (now Poland) and studied typography at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuggart (1953-55). Remembered for his skill as a typographer, Weidemann developed the font Corporate ASE for Daimler-Benz AG, which still shapes the visual appearance of Mercedes Benz today. He also designed the typeface Biblica for the German Bible Society in 1979, later renamed ITC Weidemann.

In 1964, Weidemann became a professor at the Stuttgart Academy and taught there until 1983. From 1991 to 2000 he taught at the Karlsruhe College of Design at the Center for Art and Media Technology (ZKM). Weidemann was a founding member of the Wissenschaftliche Hochschule für Unternehmensführung in Koblenz, where he taught verbal and visual communication until 1993. Professionally, we worked as a freelance graphic designer and book designer for various advertising agencies and publishing houses, developing numerous corporate identities for renowned companies such as Deutsche Bahn, Shell, Porsche, Zeiss and Aerospace. Kurt Weidemann died on March 30, 2011 at the age of 88 in Sélestat, Alsace.

Weidemann served on the Icograda board from 1972 to 1977 and he was President from 1972 to 1974.

(1910-1985) Klaus Wittkugel was one of the most important commercial and poster artists in the German Democratic Republic and a professor at the Berlin-Weißensee Arts Academy. In 1950, Wittkugel was a founding member of the East German League of Visual Artists, he was the first chairman of the League's Graphic Artists' Section. Wittkugel served as Board Member of Icograda from 1968 to 1970.

Vivian Cheng is the founder of Vivian Design, provide consultancy services in design network, event management, and promoting her own art in Jewellery and Glass. She completed a BA in industrial design at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1987. In the same year, she was awarded a special prize in the Young Designers of the Year Award hosted by the Federation of Hong Kong Industries. She began her career as a watch designer and later engaged in design of fashion accessories. She joined Lambda Industrial Limited as the head of the Product Design team and won the “Governor’s Award for Industry: Consumer Product Design” and the product design award in the Gift and House-wear Fair in 1989. She finished her Master’s degree in 1995 and joined the Vocational Training Council as a lecturer in product design. She has been the Senior Lecturer in Product Design in charge of the jewellery design course, and later responsible for exploring and developing international link with design related organizations and design schools, as well as managing industrial networking while she was the International Liaison Manager in Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI). Vivian Cheng has been an active figure in the design hubs in Hong Kong. She was council member of the Chartered Society of Designers Hong Kong from 1990 till 2003 and member of the Hong Kong Designers Association. She was member of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC), an organization supported by the Hong Kong SAR Government, from 2002 to 2004. She actively participated in organizing design conferences, various workshops organized by the HKDC and HKDI. She has also been a jury member for the Red-dot Design Award in Germany from 2006 to 2014, for the BIO 21 & BIO 22 in Slovenia at 2008 and 2010, for the Singapore Red-dot Concept Design Award 2014, for the Taipei International Design Award 2013 to 2014, and for the Lotus Prize in Changsha at 2014. Vivian was invited as one of the speaker for the Wallonia Creative Week in Belgium in 2013. She has been panel member for various assessment panels for the government and NGOs, such as the Design-Business Collaboration Scheme (DBCS) , Design Incubation Program, PMQ, etc.

Icograda President, 1983-1985 Raymond served on the Icograda board from 1979 to 1987.

David Grossman is an environmental graphic designer focusing mainly on public and institutional projects. He has many years of experience in design education, serving as a lecturer, head of department and head of school. He has long been active in the professional designer community, on the national and international levels. Grossman served as Treasurer and then President of Icograda between 1995-2003. He later served on the ICoD Executive Board between 2013 and 2020, as President during the 2015-2017 term.

David has played key roles as event organiser, editor, curator, lecturer and juror for international design festivals, catalogs, exhibitions, conferences and awards. In recent years, David has been active in supporting the development of the Chinese design industry infrastructure.

(1936-2019) Abe Rosenfeld was an Icograda Board Member between 1985 and 1991, bringing the Icograda Congress and General Assembly to Tel Aviv in 1989.

After graduation at Pratt Institute in New York, Abe established his professional design practice in New York and later went on to develop a thriving practice in Tel Aviv (Israel) where he worked on corporate identity for many of Israel's major companies. Rosenfeld was a poster designer of note, winning international recognition and prizes. He became active in the local professional design community as part of the Graphic Designers Association of Israel (GDAI), eventually serving as Treasurer and President.

(1928-2002) Augusto Morello was ICSID President for two periods, first elected in Toronto in 1997 and then re-elected in Sydney in 1999. These four years were a period of transition and great challenges for ICSID.

Through an unusual and exceptional life-long experience, he could build bridges between profession and promotion, education and business like no one else of his generation.

The three international bodies, ICOGRADA, ICSID and IFI held many joint meetings in an attempt to bring designers from all disciplines together under one banner. They tried to focus on the design profession and to speak with a united voice to relevant parties at the highest level on the global platform. 

It was during this period that Design for the World was ratified as a voice for the three bodies, focusing our attention on the relevence of socially responsible design and the belief that design could - and should - play an active role in uplifting the quality and dignity of life of all individuals on this planet.

Augusto was seminal in these discussions. It was at these meetings that we learned of his passion for and dedication to design.

He was a man of great vision with an astute understanding of the big picture. We also learned that he was a politician of the highest order, respected and revered by all. He had a colourful and warm personality and loved the fine things in life.

Augusto's passing away is a great loss both for ICSID and for all design disciplines.

Abbreviation or Acronym: amorello

(1991-1993) Giancarlo Iliprandi was President of Icograda from 1991-1993, serving as President Elect from 1989-1991 and Vice President from 1987-1989. Iliprandi was considered a master of Italian graphics, and has been called a ‘multi-instrumentalist' for his creative range—he was a teacher, painter, photographer, art director and graphic designer as well as an activist for design. Over the course of his life he won four Compasso d'Oro awards, for typography design (the Modulo font) and for his work with notable brands like Fiat and the magazine l’Arca; his fourth was given to him in 2011—for his impeccable design career, to acknowledge both the breath of his work and the archival value of his legacy. Illiprandi was part of an exciting movement in design centered in Milan in the 60s and 70s, when Milan was the city of Bob Noorda and Bruno Munari, Max Huber and Albe Steiner, Ugo Mulas and Valentino Bompiani: intellectuals living and working continuously through a vision for a better future through design. He worked with many of its key figures over the years. With the Castiglioni brothers he worked on exhibitions for the historical RAI, he developed ad campaigns, window displays and magazines for the legendary Rinascente department store with Max Huber and Bruno Munari, even collaborating with Giorgio Armani. He designed for art and sports magazines until 2000, simultaneously designing fonts and typefaces, logos for museums and fashion brands.

Omar Vulpinari was born in the Republic of San Marino in 1963 and raised in the United States. Today he lives in Treviso, Italy. Since 1998 creative director of the Visual Communication Department at Fabrica, the Benetton research center on communication founded by Oliviero Toscani. Directing projects for United Nations, Witness, Amnesty International, Reporters Without Borders, United Colors of Benetton, Coca-Cola, Alessi, Porsche, Vespa, The New Yorker, Corriere della Sera, La Repubblica, Electa, Mediaset, Fox International. Fabrica's communication design work under his direction has been featured by major international press and exhibitions at the Bonnefanten Museum in Maastricht, the National Museum of Arts and Traditions in Rome, the Vivid Gallery in Rotterdam, the GGG in Tokyo, the DDD Gallery in Osaka, the ZeroOne Design Center in Seoul. In 2006 it was featured in the exhibition 'Fabrica: Les Yeux Ouverts' at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Co-curator for Phaidon's Area and contributor to Steven Heller's Becoming a Graphic Designer for Wiley and The Education of a Graphic Designer for Allworth Press. His independent work has recently been selected by Taschen for the second edition of Design Now. Omar teaches at the University of San Marino - University of Venice, where in 2006 he directed of the lecture series 'Graphic Design and Social Concern'. He is a frequent speaker, juror and workshop leader for major international design events organised by Icograda, AGI, ISTD, AIGA, JAGDA, Profile Intermedia, GraficEurope and numerous others. He studied at the University of Bologna and the Albe Steiner Center in Ravenna.

(1939 - 2011) Born in Tokyo in 1939, he graduated from the Kuwasawa Design School in 1962. After working at an advertising agency, he established the A&A Masuteru Aoba Design Office in 1969. He won the Grand Prix and Runner-up of the Asahi Advertising Award (1963 and 1964), Grand Prix at the International Biennale of Graphic Design, Brno (1982), the Gold Award at the International Poster Biennial in Warsaw (1987), the Gold Award at the New York ADC International Exhibition (1992), and the Japan Advertising Award Yamana Prize (1995). He designed the first official poster for the Nagano 1998 Winter Olympics, and received the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 2006. He was also a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI), a committee member of Tokyo ADC, and Vice President of JAGDA. He passed away in 2011.

(1929-2009) Born in Tokyo in 1929, he taught himself painting and design after dropping out of Hosei University Professional Course. From 1955 to 1985 he won numerous accolades such as the Japan Advertising Artists Club Award and Encouragement Prize, Grand Prix at the World Film Poster Competition, the Mainichi Design Prize, the Kisaku Ito Award for the film Shinju Ten no Amijima (Double Suicide at Amijima), Silver and Special Prize at the International Poster Biennale in Warsaw, the MITI Prize at the Japan Book Design Awards, Grand Prix for “the Best Book Design from all over the world ” (Leipzig), and awards for print work at Berlin Intergraphics. He was the producer of the government pavilion at The International Exposition, Tsukuba, Japan, 1985, and designed the colors of the venue. He received the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 1990. He passed away in 2009.

(1932-2009) Born in Tokyo in 1932, he graduated from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music Department of Design in 1956. He helped create official posters for the Japan World Exposition, Osaka 1970 in addition to various official events in Japan and abroad, sign planning, and the creation of public space design. He was a prize winner and a judging committee member at international poster competitions in the former Czechoslovakia, Poland, the U.S., France, Finland, and Russia. He won the  Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture’s Art Encouragement Prize for New Artists (1976), the Mainichi Art Award (1986), was inducted into the New York ADC Hall of Fame (1987) and the Tokyo ADC Hall of Fame (2006), and won the Katzumie Masaru Award (2007). He received the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 1997. He was president of the Japan Graphic Designers Association, Japanese representative for the Alliance Graphique Internationale, associate professor and also a visiting professor at Tokyo University of the Arts. Born in Miyazaki Prefecture in 1947, he established Beans Co., Ltd. in 1978. He has been an active art director and graphic designer in the fields of music CD cover design, book design, and advertisements and commercials for Parco, Suntory, the Asahi Shimbun, Comme des Garçons, and more, with innovative design work. He created the NPB emblem for the Nippon Professional Baseball Organization. His past awards include the Tokyo ADC Grand Prix, Tokyo TDC Grand Prix, and Japan Advertising Award Yamana Prize. He has published two collections of his work entitled Inoue Tsuguya Graphic Works 1981–2007 and Inoue Tsuguya Graphics: Talking the Dragon (Little More Books). (1938-2012) Eiko Ishioka  was a Japanese art director, costume designer, and graphic designer known for her work in stage, screen, advertising, and print media.

Ishioka began her career with the advertising division of the cosmetics company Shiseido in 1961 and won Japan's most prestigious advertising award four years later. Noted for her advertising campaigns for the Japanese boutique chain Parco, she collaborated with sportswear company Descente in designing uniforms and outerwear for members of the Swiss, Canadian, Japanese, and Spanish teams at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and was the director of costume design for the opening ceremony of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. She won two Academy Awards for costume design.

Hiroshi Kojitani was the founding Chairman of the Friends of Icograda. He sat on the Icograda Executive Board from 1987 to 1993 (Vice President from 1987 to 1991). Thanks largely to Hiroshi Kojitani's personal efforts and the generous financial support he was able to help raise from his fellow designers within the Japanese Graphic Design Association (JAGDA), this network of Friends began in 1991. Hiroshi produced the first Friends leaflets, promotional materials, Tshirts, buttons etc., which were initially distributed at the Icograda Congress in Montreal in September 1991.

Tadahito Nadamoto is a Japanese graphic artist, illustrator and painter born on Feb 12, 1926. He started his professional career as a graphic designer at Sanyo Electric Railway Co, in 1956 and joined Yoshio Hayakawa's design office in 1961. He is the founder of the Tokyo Illustrators Club (TIC), which was formed alongside Tadanori Yoko, Aquirax Uno, and Makoto Wada in 1965. He made his way to Tokyo in 1967 and opened his own studio in Roppongi when he became a freelance illustrator. He is also the founder of the Tokyo Illustrators Society (1988).

He has received numerous awards including the Gold Medal of the SDA (1970), Kodansha Cultural Award in Publishing (1979), New York Japan Graphic Design Award (1983), Magazine Award of the Fuji Sankei Group (1983), and Kuwasawa Design Award (2008). He was the first illustrator to receive the Purple Ribbon Medal in 1993 and he has also received the Order of the Rising Sun (4th Class, Gold Rays with Rosette) in 2003. He is also the first Japanese illustrator to hold an exhibition in Seoul in 1983.

(1926-2013) Makoto Nakamura was born Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture. He graduated from  the design department of Tokyo Fine Art School (now Tokyo School of the Arts).  A Graphic designer, Nakamura was employed as an art director in the publicity department of Shiseido in 1949.  He is the recipient of numerous advertising design awards.

Motoo Nakanishi is a graduate of Kuwasawa Design School, and Waseda University. He founded the consulting firm PAOS in 1968 to pursue research and practice on the theme of the establishment of design theories for management and the development of application-oriented design methodologies. PAOS has worked with some 100 corporations representing Japan on CI branding and business strategy design, establishing a long track record of success and producing numerous hallmark case studies in the process. Nakanishi has published many books about corporate identity including 'Design Policy : Corporate Image Formation' and 'DECOMAS – Design Coordination as a Management Strategy'. From 1998 to 2000, He Nakanishi was the Chairman of the G Mark (Good Design Award) and helped guide the privatization of the organization. From 2010 to 2018, he was Course Director of STRAMD (Strategic Management Design) Tokyo and Osaka.

Tetsuya Ohta was born in Nobeoka in 1941. He graduated from the Kuwazawa Institute of Design in 1976. After working as the first assistant to Ikko Tanaka (Ikko Tanaka Design Studio), Ohta established Tetsuya Ohta Design Studio in Tokyo in 1975.  His work was exhibited, including: 'CI of Japanese Companies', 1985 at Matsuya Department Store; 'Diagram' at Ginza Graphic Gallery, 1991. (1931-1998) Susumu Sakane was Icograda Vice President from 1981-1987. At the end of his term, he received the President's Trophy in recognition of his outstanding services to the aims of Icograda. He was involved in major international promotion projects for Japan-based concerns, such as Sony and Honda. He worked for the Osaka Expo, the Vancouver Expo, and several other international expositions. He contributed to the promotion of graphic design through editorial work as an advisor and as an editorial consultant. A very active member of JAGDA, he energetically promoted cooperation between designers in the Asia/Pacific region, where he organised a first meeting in 1982. In addition to his activities in design, he also had extensive experience in documentary and feature film production. He worked as director of Sun Ad Co. until his retirement.

Following a career at Kanegafuchi Boseki and Sankei Shimbun, he participated in the founding of Nippon Design Center in 1960. In 1963, he established Ikko Tanaka Design Studio. His many awards include the Japan Advertising Artists Club Award, Silver Prize at the International Poster Biennale in Warsaw, Mainichi Design Award, the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture’s Art Encouragement Prize for New Artists, New York ADC Gold Prize, Tokyo ADC Members Grand Prix, Mainichi Art Award, Japan Inter-Design Forum Award, TDC Members Gold Prize, Asahi Prize, and the inaugural Yusaku Kamekura Design Award. He has also been inducted into the New York and Tokyo ADC Halls of Fame. He was awarded the Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon and selected as a Person of Cultural Merit. He passed away in 2002.

Multidisciplinary designer Masakazu Taniguchi was born in Kyoto in 1942. He graduated in Industrial Design from Musashino Art University and practices as a Communication Designer, Social Designer, Environmental Designer and Marketing Strategist for Japan Life Design Systems. He is a professor of the Ritsumeikan University Graduate School of Business Administration and a visiting professor at the Tokyo City University Faculty of Urban Life Studies. Taniguchi  has sat on the board of directors of the Japan Institute of Design, been a consultant to the Japan Web Designers Association and a judge for their Web Design Awards.

(1938-2008) Born in 1938 in Kyoto. As a foremost figure of design community in Kyoto, he produced designs encompassing traditional beauty of Kyoto, with keen interest in Japanese traditional cultures such as Kimono, confectionery, town house and festivals. In later years he focused on teaching communication design as professor at Seian Unicersity of Art and Design, and gave numerous lectures on various subjects including industry-government-academia initiatives. He passed away in 2008.

(1920-1997) Born on 10 November 1920 in Minoo, Osaka, Ryuichi Yamashiro was a graphic designer, typographer and commercial artist notably known for his peculiar poster art. On piece, the Hayashi-Mori (1955) was dubbed the “most beautiful poster in the world” by German graphic designer, HAP Grieshaber.

(1958-2021) Essam was an educator, and ultimately, Dean in the Faculty of Art and Design at the University of Applied Science Private University (ASU) (Jordan), a pioneer educational institution established in 1992, renowned for its art and graphic and interior design programmes. Previous to this esteemed position, Essam ran his own graphic design media company, MIDAS in Amman. He founded and served as President of Middle East Design Educators Association (MEDEA) from 2015 onwards and served as a representative of his home organisation for ICoD, IIID and Cumulus (the International Association of the Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media). A great supporter of expanding professional standards for design in the Middle East, Essam played an active role as a participant and speaker at numerous design conferences worldwide.

(1931-2004) Pieter Dirk Brattinga was born in Hilversum on January 31, 1931. From 1951 until 1974 he was director of design at Steendrukkerij De Jong & Co in Hilversum. Between 1960 and 1964 he was professor and chairman at the visual communications faculty at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. He and Dick Dooijes wrote the book 'History of the Dutch Poster 1890–1960' (1968).

Pieter Brattinga was an Icograda Board Member from 1963 to 1966. He was Secretary General from 1966 to 1970.

Paul Hughes is based in Amsterdam where he is a strategic director and partner of Lava, the creative strategic design agency recently awarded European Design Agency of the Year 2010. Since 2005 Paul has consulted with Design Machine in New York, a strategic brand building company run by Alexander Gelman, who has been called one of the ‘world’s most famous modern and contemporary artists in all media.’ There is an emerging group of people who have become a key driving force in economic development that social scientist Richard Florida calls the Creative Class. These people face new challenges, have new responsibilities, and require a skill of life-long learning. Paul is an active coach to people who interact with, or act within, this Creative Class on an individual and team level. Paul is also a speaker and trainer on the subject of Unpacking the Creative Process. Creative processes need not be haphazard or questionable procedures; rather, creativity can become deliberate and effective procedures. This deliberate approach to creativity and innovation is captured in what he calls Design Thinking, a practical model that contains key principles behind any creative process. Hughes has interviewed many people within the creative field, including: Dr. Edward de Bono who is a leading international authority in the field of thinking skills, Stefan Sagmeister who has been called ‘one of the most influential people in design today’ and Michael Young who was called ‘the grandfather of Social Entrepreneurship.’ Additionally, Paul speaks on the subject of what makes Dutch Design so unique. He believes that it is not individual designers nor their productions that makes Dutch Design unique but rather it is the connections between them. As an Industrial Designer, he had a consulting company that working in many industries including sport and leisure products, computer control systems for ships and the oil industry, as well as transportation, including intercity trains and trams, as well as cars. His work is published in several European countries, Japan and USA

(1920-1998) Knut Otto Yran was born on 18 June 1920 in Oslo, Norway. He was an illustrator, designer and author and a leading practitioner in Norwegian advertising and book art in the 1950s. Knut Yran was employed by the publishing house Aschehoug from 1950 to 1953, at which point he founded his own advertising agency in Oslo. From 1966 to 1980 he was chief designer for the electronics manufacturer Philips in Eindhoven in the Netherlands, a post he held for 15 years. Knut Yran illustrated a number of books and book covers, record covers and posters, including the poster for the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo. He also designed on side of the medal for the games. He won several international drawing and design competitions.

Knut Yran was President of Icograda from 1966 to 1968. He was chairman of the Norwegian Design Council (ND) from 1982 to 1987. He was appointed an honorary member of former Norwegian Graphic Designers, now Grafill.

Born in Gujrat, the cultural cradle of Pakistan, in 1960, Shabbir Hussain was fortunate to have been welcomed by an environment that was designed to foster creativity in a sensitive mind.

So instead of formal education, it was the social fabric, the people, the culture and customs that did the schooling and grooming of the artist in him. Hussain started his artistic career as a student of calligraphy and painting, traversed various creative phases, such as cinema paintings, wall paintings, outdoor media designing and management, and finally embraced advertising as a profession in capacity of a graphic designer.

Today, he is associated with, M.COM, a leading ad agency of Pakistan, as its Executive Art Director.

Hussain s wide range of skills allows for a truly interdisciplinary approach to design, with an added fillip of moving effortlessly from the traditional print design to new media campaigns. Celebrating the success of managing various brands, Hussain prides in appearance of his work in numerous national and international publications home and abroad.

Peter Bankov was born in 1969 in Minsk. He graduated from the Minsk Art College in 1988 and the Moscow State Polygraph Institute in 1993. He is the creator and editor-in-chief of [kAk) magazine, one of the key points of reference for Russian graphic design. Peter is also the founder and creative director of Design Depot in Moscow. He has received numerous international awards and has been a panel member for many contests around the world. Peter holds the Gold prize from Italian Poster Biennale 2015, the Colorado Poster Biennale 2015, and Strelka/Russia 2014; as well as the the Jury prize from Golden Bee Biennale 2014. His art projects are part of private collections in Moscow, London and Beijing. He is the author and presenter of a cycle of lectures on design, and lectures in Russia, the CIS and Europe. His work is in the collections of Modern Art at MoMA, New York, (USA); Klingspor Museum Offenbach (Germany); Museum of the; Image (MOTI) (Netherlands); Les Arts Décoratifs (France); and Lahti Poster Museum (Finland).

Born in (former) Yugoslavia, Jani graduated from studies in visual communication and scenography in Rome, Italy. He is active as a designer and director of Arsenal, a design studio he founded in 1992, after a long career as designer, art director and creative director with Studio Marketing Design Center. Jani's work has been exhibited extensively and has received many professional awards. Since 1998 Jani has been a lecturer of visual communication design in the Department of Design, Ljubljana Academy of Fine Arts. Since 1997 he has served as president of the Designers Society of Slovenia. Jani speaks Slovene, Croatian, Italian, and English.

Icograda Vice President, 1997-2001 ahn sang-soo has long been one of the most influential designers in East Asia. His typographical development work in his native Korea has almost made him a household name. He can justifiably claim to have master-minded and supervised a revolutionary transition of the traditional Hangul, the Korean alphabet, into a functional medium for today, with all its digital demands and interpretations. Born in Chungju in 1952, he has enjoyed a long career as a designer and educator. A graduate of Seoul's Hongik University, where he is now a Professor in the College of Fine Arts and Head of the School of Graphic Design, his early works in industry served to fire his enthusiasm for visual communication across many disciplines. He has fifteen books on design-related subjects to his credit and copious essays and papers. He is also responsible for translating seminal works on typography by Jan Tschichold and Emil Ruder. He holds a number of awards and prizes including a commendation by the Korean Language Academy for meritorious contribution to the advancement of Hangul (he has four major Korean fonts to his credit). As early as 1983, he was selected as Designer of the Year by Design magazine. His list of design achievements, both in Korea and abroad, is indeed comprehensive. It includes the design and production of many major international exhibitions and over forty shows in which his work has featured. He regularly travels abroad to lecture on his projects and to promote Asian design developments and ideas. From 1997 to 2001, Ahn was made Vice President of Icograda, the International Council of Graphic Design Associations. In this role he has been responsible for establishing a number of international workshops and has served on several International Competition juries. In 2000 October, he chaired Icograda's prestigious Millenium Congress 'Oullim 2000' held in Seoul. Also in 2001, he organized TypoJanchi, a international typography biennale held in Seoul. The event attracted designers from all parts of the world and culminated with the publication of a collaborative graphic design education manifesto for designers in the new century.

Amand Domenech i Casanova was trained at the Escola d'Arts i Oficis with the painter and scenographer Domenec Soler i Gili, and at various graphic arts studios and advertising agencies in Barcelona. He was a member of the Catalan Association of Watercolour Artists (Agrupacio d'Aquarellistes de Catalunya) between 1946 to 1963. He held exhibitions in Barcelona and took part in a multitude of international events involving graphic art created for advertising, activities in which he was awarded numerous prizes and distinctions. He won prizes in thirty advertising poster competitions. During the period from 1960 to 1962, he took part in a 'stage' at the Klausfelder Studio in Vevey, Switzerland. He was a founding member of Grafistes, Agrupacio FAD (1961), whose position as manager he took up in 1967. In April 1963 he represented the organisation in the inaugural meeting held in London for the foundation of Icograda. He was appointed Vice President of the College of Graphic Designers (Collegi de Dissenyadors Grafics / CODIG), from its constitution (1981-1988). He taught at the Escola Massana (1964-1967), the Escola Oficial de Publicitat (1968-1970) and at the Faculty of Information Sciences at the Autonoma University in Barcelona (Bellaterra, 1987). He collaborated in various articles for professional publications and his graphic artwork has been published in educational treatise and in a variety of international technical publications. Amand Domenech i Casanova died in Barcelona on 31 July 2002.

Stig Hogdal passed away on 12 January 2012 at 98 years old.

Hogdal served on the Icograda board from 1977 to 1979, and from 1981 to 1985. He was President of Icograda from 1981 to 1983.

Educated at the Konstfackskolan in Stockholm 1976-80. Icograda Vice President, 1995-1997 Icograda Board Member, 1997-1999 President of the Nordic Council of Illustrators and Graphic Designers, 1999-2001. (Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Norway and Sweden) Boardmember of FST (The Swedish Association of Illustrators and Graphic Designers), 1993-2003. Member of the Swedish Local Organization Committee for the Icograda/Icsid/Ifi congress Design 2005 in the Nordic countries. I was football player and still practice as a coach for the local women football team. Every Friday morning I play ice hockey and in the winter I spend the weekends skiing. As ski resorts also is one of my major clients I had to keep myself updated to the sport.

Visual communication designer and educator. 

(1904–1983) Hans Neuburg was a graphic designer instrumental in the development of the International Typographic Style. He was born in Králíky, Austria-Hungary and grew up in Zürich where he attended the Orell Füssli Art Institute. Following his graduation, he worked as a designer in advertising and publishing. In 1936, Neuburg opened his own studio in Zurich. In 1958, he became a founding member of Neue Grafik, a quarterly design publication.

Jason Fan has more than 20 years experience in graphic design. He received his diploma of Applied Art from National Taiwan Academy of Arts in 1981. After his two-year military service and working as a designer for two years in Taipei, he went to New York and later received his Master’s Degree from Pratt Institute in 1989. Returning to Taiwan, Fan started to work as the deputy manager of graphic design section at the Sunrise Department Store, the leading brand in the fashion category at that time. One year later, he founded Signet Design Company, which soon became one of Taiwan's leading design firms.

Fan was elected President of Taiwan Graphic Design Association for 2006-2008. During his term, he not only broadened the interfaces with more cross-disciplinary programs, such as applications of Taiwanese indigenous culture and arts in the design of daily goods, but also created the bi-monthly Energy Bar to connect with experts from different fields, as he believed in the importance for designers to appreciate things beyond design prospective. He worked as the CEO of the Cultural & Creative Industries Center at National Taiwan Normal University until August 2009. Fan was dedicated to providing more resources for various Taiwan graphic design communities and related associations, including holding regular meetings to increase understanding between each other and developing the closer integration of the communities. He was the co-director of "2008 and 2009 Taiwan International Design Competition / Student Section", considered as the highest prize for student design competition nationwide. Fan is currently one of the originators and member delegates of Taiwan Design Alliance, a respected multidisciplinary association of Taiwanese designers, one of the partners of the 2011 IDA Congress.

Fan has received numerous design awards, including the golden prize of Taiwan National Graphic Design, Judge's Award of the Graphic Design in China and Excellent Awards from the Hong Kong Designers Association. In 2007, he was awarded the distinguished alumni of the National Taiwan University of Arts. In order to train more young professionals, Fan teaches part-time at local art institutions and is often invited to be the speaker and juror in nationwide and overseas awards schemes. 

Apex was born and educated in Taiwan. He is active as an educator, designer, author, and consultant. Apex is a professor in the Graduate School of Fine Arts, National Taiwan Normal University, his alma mater. He has also served as a visiting professor throughout Asia.



Apex has his own design consultancy, is managing director of The Graphic Design Association, and is a consultant to the Taiwan Corporate Identity Association, the Kaohslung Creators Association, and the Taiwan Poster Design Association. He was the founding president of the Taiwan Image Poster Design Association, and a founder of the Asian Corporate Identity Association.



Apex is fluent in Taiwanese, Chinese, and English.

Yeşim Demir runs her design studio in Istanbul, lectures at Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts and is currently president of GMK, the Turkish Society of Graphic Designers. Earlier she worked as art and creative director in Young&Rubicam and RPM/Radar CDP Europe.



Demir’s works mainly on book design and corporate identities. She has won many awards and her works have been exhibited in Istanbul, Duisburg, New York, Buenos Aires and Brno. She has given lectures and workshops in Grafist Design Days and Yahşibeyworkhops. Her GMK presidency tasks included AGI Istanbul Congress 2009, 2013 IDA Istanbul Congress committee and the Turkish Design Advisory Committee (Ministry of Industry).

Icograda Next Generation Representative, 1995-1997

Willy de Majo was the Founder and first President of Icograda from 1963 to 1966. 

When Willy de Majo first arrived in England just before the Second World War, graphic design as a profession was in its infancy. By the time he died it had grown into a major business and a remarkable international family. De Majo was a designer, lecturer, speaker and author, and will be best remembered for founding and fathering Icograda. His place in design history is assured on several fronts. As a speaker on design he was in great demand. He contributed to most international conferences and chaired or participated in a number of special design committees. He was an exceptionally competent designer whose understanding of business and production methods was unusual in those early days. Enterprising and alert, he could master the most complex problems with ease and arrive at solutions that appeared deceptively simple. Born in Vienna in 1917, de Majo studied at the Vienna Commercial Academy, intending to go into his father's textile business. However he found the work dull and started freelancing as a graphic designer in the evenings. With a combination of check and courage, as well as his evident flair, he attracted a number of important commissions particularly in the poster field. Early in 1939 he emigrated to England and joined the BBC as a broadcaster. During the war he served with distinction as an officer and pilot with the Royal Yugoslav Air Force, later transferring to the RAF and SHAEF in Africa, the Middle East and Europe, for which he was appointed MBE. He had always been a great traveller and as early as 1948, after a study tour of Canada and the United States, he established a New York office. By the 1950s his clients ranged from the Festival of Britain, where he was designer-in-chief of the 'Farm and Factory' exhibition in Northern Ireland, to ABC Television for which he designed one of the first animated symbols. In 1953 de Majo was a guest speaker at the International Design Conference in Aspen, Colorado, the first of many appearances on international platforms. He was in constant demand as a speaker and with his rapidly growing design practice it is surprising that there was room in his life for another venture. Yet at the busiest point in his graphic career he founded Icograda with Peter Kneebone in 1963. De Majo's contribution to design was recognised by the award of the Chartered Society of Designers' design medal in 1969, the commemorative medal ZPAP, the Association of Polish Designers, honorary membership of GVN Graphic Designers Association and later of associations in Belgium and Austria. He was made an Honorary Fellow of the Society of Typographic Designers. Of all his qualities his abundant energy stands out most memorably. The ill-health that he quietly suffered in his later years did not deter him from pursuing his rich and varied career right up to the end. The international family of graphic designers that he created will remember him with love.

(1931-2006) Alan Fletcher's international design reputation is reflected by his commissions from major corporations and cultural institutions around the world. He began his career in New York where he worked for Fortune magazine, the Container Corporation and IBM. He moved back to London and in 1962 co-founded Fletcher/Forbes/Gill, which served such clients as Pirelli, Cunard, Penguin Books, BP and Olivetti. He co-founded Pentagram in 1972 and created design programmes for Reuters, Lucas Industries, The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, The Victoria and Albert Museum, Lloyd's of London, Daimler Benz, Arthur Andersen & Co and ABB. In 1992 he left Pentagram to work alone in his own studio. He has received gold awards from the British Designers & Art Directors Association (D&AD) and the New York 'One Show'. In 1977 he shared the D&AD President's Award for outstanding contributions to design with Pentagram partner Colin Forbes. In 1982 the Society of Industrial Artists and Designers awarded him their Annual Medal for outstanding achievement in design. In 1993 he was awarded The Prince Philip Prize for Designer of the Year. He served as President of the Designers & Art Directors Association in 1973, and as President of the Alliance Graphique Internationale from 1982 to 1985. He is a Royal Designer for Industry, a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers, Senior Fellow of the Royal College of Art. In 1994 he was elected to the Hall of Fame of the American Art Directors club. 'Beware Wet Paint', a book on 35 years of his work, was published by Phaidon in 1996. He has co-authored 'Identity Kits' - a pictorial survey of visual signs (Studio Vista), 'Graphic design: visual comparisons' (Studio Vista), 'A Sign System Manual' (Studio Vista) and four publications on the work of Pentagram; 'Pentagram - the work of five designers' and 'Living by Design' (Lund Humphries), 'Ideas on Design' (Faber and Faber), 'The Compendium' (Phaidon). (1912-1995) Born in Budapest, Hungary, 16 April 1912, John Halas is said to be 'the father of British animation'. In 1940, he and his wife, Joy Batchelor, established the Halas and Batchelor studio. They produced some 2000 animated shorts, seven feature-length animated films, and trained countless young people to become talented animators for nearly 50 years. Their animated version of George Orwell's 'Animal Farm' was released in 1954 and was the first animated feature-length film made in Britain. John Halas was a pioneer in his field and was one of the first to embrace computer animation not just as a labour saving device, but as a creative force. He believed that animation was a kinetic art form which could set the human mind free from the confines of reality. He was President and founder member of ASIFA the International Animated Film Association from 1960 to 1985. Throughout his life, he produced films, articles and books and contributed to conferences and festivals. He was awarded the OBE in 1972 and the Pro Cultura Hungaricus in 1992. John Halas died in London 20 January 1995.

Halas was involved with all aspects of design and was associated with Icograda from its inception. From 1970 to 1974, he served on the Icograda board.  He was President of Icograda from 1970 to 1972.

(1914-1991) Frederick Henri Kay Henrion (born Heinrich Fritz Kohn, Nuremberg, Germany) was a German graphic designer. F.H.K. Henrion furthered the design industry by practicing it, teaching it, and organising it as a profession over the course of 45 years.

'What needs discussion today, especially in respect of art and design, practice and education, is to find out where these two disciplines differ and where they overlap. If it proves possible to define these areas clearly it will be easier to decide where and when joint art- and design-courses seem appropriate and where separate and independent courses are like to obtain better results. 

Mies van der Rohe put it 'Design is doing more with less'. This often-quoted maxim holds a lot of general truth and can almost always be used as a valid criterion when comparing design solutions and when rejecting one alternative in favour of another which is simpler, which in fact does more with less. It could be applied to textile design, posters, typography, packaged design and equally to a locomotive, a space rocket or a wrist-watch, an electric shaver or a building - but not necessarily to a painting or a sculpture. To design is to have a plan, a concept in one's mind before it is carried out.'

Teal Triggs is Professor of Graphic Design and Postgraduate Research Lead, School of Communication, Royal College of Art, London. She was Associate Dean from 2012 until 2021. Teal is also a co-Editor of Design Issues (MIT Press). She holds a BFA (Hons) in Graphic Design and MA in Art History (University of Texas), MA in Design History (Middlesex Polytechnic) and PhD in Design History (Department of Typography & Graphic Communication, University of Reading). Previously she was Director of Information Environments (IE), London College of Communication, University of the Arts London. She has taught extensively on BA and MA courses and notably, as founder-Course Director, MA Design Writing Criticism and MRes Information Environments, London College of Communication. Teal has extensive experience supervising MPhil and PhD students. Her research focuses primarily on graphic design history, design research methods, self-publishing, and feminism. As a graphic design historian, critic, and educator she has authored and edited several books in the field including The Graphic Design Reader (co-edited with Leslie Atzmon, Bloomsbury, 2019), Fanzines (Thames & Hudson, 2010), The Typographic Experiment: Radical Innovation in Contemporary Type Design (Thames & Hudson, 2000), and ‘Below Critical Radar’: Fanzines and Comics from 1976 to Now (co-edited with Roger Sabin, Slab-O-Concrete, 2000). Her writings have appeared in numerous international design publications including étaps, Print, Journal of Design History, Eye: The International Review of Graphic Design, Blueprint, Visible Language, Zed, Emigre, and Design Issues. Teal was founder-Editor-in-Chief of ico-D’s Communication Design: Interdisciplinary and Graphic Design Research, co-Editor of the academic interdisciplinary journal Visual Communication (Sage), Review Editor for Design Issues (MIT Press); and Supervising Editor, of the online journal Iridescent: Icograda Journal of Design Research. Teal is Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (PFHEA), and Fellow of the Design History Society (FDRS), Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts and Manufacture (FRSA), Royal College of Art (FRCA) and, the International Society of Typographic Designers (FISTD).

Icograda Treasurer, 1981-1987

Lewis Woudhuysen was born on 15 September 1912. The Dutch designer studied book design and worked at the international advertising agency J. Walter Thompson in Amsterdam in the 30s. In 1940, he fled to England where he designed for the Dutch government in exile. Woudhuysen later joined the Dutch army. After the war he remained in England, working as an art director for Adprint and the publisher Newman Neame. In 1954 he started own practice; his clients included John Courage, Cambridge Instruments and Clydesdale Bank. Woudhuysen died on 12 November 1985 in London.

Lewis Woudhuysen  was Icograda Vice President (1974-1977) and Icograda Treasurer (1977-1981).

As the Dean of Design at London College of Communication, University of the Arts, Lawrence leads undergraduate and postgraduate courses in advertising design, communication design, illustration and visual media and typographic design. Lawrence has lectured and spoken at conferences, institutions and design events nationally and internationally including in Australia, China, India, Israel, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Russia, Serbia, Singapore, Turkey and the USA. Lawrence has acted as consultant and external examiner for numerous academic institutions in the UK as well as in China, Greece, Serbia, Singapore and Russia. His expertise covers academic course documentation, specifically in the fields of graphic design, illustration, photography and interactive media. Having worked as an illustrator since graduation with 1st Class Honours in Graphic Arts from Camberwell College of Arts in 1986 and MA Illustration from the Royal College of Art in 1989, Lawrence's clients have included major international newspapers, magazines, book publishers, design companies and advertising agencies. Lawrence continues to create illustrations for the Comment and Debate pages of The Guardian Newspaper, as a regular fortnightly contributor.? Lawrence was a founding partner of illustration studio: Big Orange based in Hoxton, London and is still operational almost twenty years after it first launched. In the early 1990s Zeegen, as founding partner and director, launched Heart - and remains one of the UK's foremost contemporary illustration agencies. In 2006 Zeegen launched ZeegenRush, as founding partner and director, before departing to take a more active role in design education.? As a design writer, Lawrence has contributed to numerous magazines and publications including Creative Review, MacFormat, The Journal (Association of Illustrators), Digital Creative Arts, Computer Arts and is a regular lead contributor to Computer Arts Projects. The author of five published books on the subject of illustration - Digital Illustration: A Master Class in Creative Image-Making (Rotovision 2005), The Fundamentals of Illustration (AVA 2005), Secrets of Digital Illustration: A Master Class in Commercial Image-Making (Rotovision 2007), What is Illustration? (Rotovision 2009) and Complete Digital Illustration (Rotovision 2010). His latest books, The Design Graduate's Survival Manual (Laurence King) and Fifty Years of Contemporary Illustration (Laurence King) are to be published in 2012 and 2013.

Icograda Vice President, 1979-1981

(1908-1972) Will Burtin studied typography and design at the Cologne Werkschule. He practised design successfully in Germany before emigrating to the USA in 1938. He worked for the US Army Air Force designing graphics and exhibitions before becoming art director of Fortune magazine in 1945. His work for Fortune was marked by innovative solutions to presenting complex information in graphically understandable ways.

In 1949 he established his own firm. Among his clients were the Upjohn Company, Union Carbide, Eastman Kodak and the Smithsonian Institution. Burtin's great genius was in his ability to visualize complex scientific and technological information. He created several award winning exhibitions including the 1958 model of a human body cell. Burtin believed that through his work he could become the 'communicator, link, interpreter and inspirer' who is able to make scientific knowledge comprehensible.

Will Burtin was a Vice President of Icograda from 1968 to 1972.

Andréa Pellegrino is a Partner and Director of Business Development at Worldstudio, an innovative strategy and design firm in New York City. Her unique area of expertise is in developing strategies, partnerships and programming that benefit society and allow clients to engage key audiences in lasting and meaningful ways. An acknowledged thought-leader in the growing fields of ‘design for good’ and community engagement, Andréa teaches at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and leads a series of workshops on funding social change. As Director, Strategic Alliances, at AIGA, the professional association for design, Andréa worked with corporate, media and non-profit clients on sponsorship programs and affiliations and communicated the value of design to the business community, related organizations, and the general public. Previously, Andréa worked for 15 years in the media field. On the management side, she led advertising and marketing teams for Jonas Publishing, Nature Publishing Group and, most recently, for Print, HOW and I.D. magazines. Earlier in her career she worked in advertising and marketing for American Express Publishing and The New Yorker. Andréa graduated with a BA from the University of Notre Dame and attended the Business Perspectives program at Harvard University.

Elizabeth Resnick, a professor of graphic design at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Boston, Massachusetts USA earned her B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees in Graphic Design from the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, Rhode Island, USA. Resnick served on the chapter board of AIGA Boston from 1989–2005, organizing numerous public lecture and exhibition events. From 2003–2005 she served on the AIGA National 'Design Education Steering Committee'. In 2007, She received AIGA Boston’s Fellows Award in recognition to her service to her community. Resnick is a passionate design curator who has organized six comprehensive design exhibitions, most with co-curators: Russell Mills: 'Within/Without' (1991) with Teresa Flavin; 'Dutch Graphic Design: 1918-1945' (1994) with Alston W. Purvis; 'Makoto Saito: Art of the Poster' (1999) with Jan Kubasiewicz; 'The Graphic Imperative: International Posters of Peace, Social Justice and The Environment' (2005) with Chaz Maviyane-Davies and Frank Baseman; 'Graphic Intervention: 25 Years of International AIDS Awareness Posters 1985–2010' with Javier Cortés (2010); and 'Graphic Advocacy: International Posters for the Digital Age: 2001–2012' (2012). Her work in promoting International socio-political poster design has earned her guest invitations at the BICM Mexican Poster Biennial 2012 and 2014, and the Bolivian Poster Biennial in 2013, where she has given poster workshops. She has lectured often on the subject of socio-political design and other design pedagogical topics throughout the USA, Mexico, Turkey, China, Ireland, UK, The Netherlands and Korea. Resnick’s publications include catalogs for most of the exhibitions mentioned above; “Design for Communication: Conceptual Graphic Design Basics” for John Wiley & Sons Publishers (2003), and “Graphic Design: A Problem-Solving Approach to Visual Communication” for Prentice-Hall Publishing (1984). She is currently working on a new book of International university-level social engagement assignment briefs titled ‘Developing Citizen Designers’ to be published in 2016 by Bloomsbury Academic, London. She writes occasional commentaries, event reviews, and has published interviews with prominent designers and design educators, published in EYE Magazine (UK), AIGA Journal of Graphic Design (USA), Graphis Magazine (USA) Graphics International Magazine (UK), TipoGrafica Magazine (Argentina) and IDEA Magazine (Japan).
