Ljubljana (Slovenia) - The upcoming Emzin seminar on graphic design features the founders of design group cyan from Berlin and renowned artist and designer Luba Lukova from New York.

On the first day of the seminar Detlef Fiedler and Daniela Haufe, the founders of cyan, will present form und zweck, a design-critical magazine that they published and designed together between 1990 and 1995. The participants will hear stories and facts surrounding the production of the magazine.

In the afternoon session they will present two relevant projects within the motto Sound and image, i.e. posters for the Berlin based sound-art platform and gallery Singuhr and Notations. This is a piece made by their students at the Academy of Visual Arts, Leipzig, in which they have tried to find an adequate visual way of transcribing electronic music pieces.

On the second day cyan will present examples of their work for the Bauhaus Dessau foundation and a huge panoramic photo-collage of 38 relevant contemporary buildings in Germany made for the German pavilion at the 2004 Venetian Biennale. They will present the formation of the unique project entitled "a book without a beginning or end", developed together with the artist Olafur Eliasson for the 2003 Venetian Biennale. They will also show numerous catalogues designed for several exhibitions, among them the main catalogue for the Friedrich Christian Flick collection which was awarded the Gold Cube by The Art Directors Club New York.

For the last session they will present an example of their collaboration with the dance company Toula Limnaios. The Real-time compiler is a dance, sound, motion, image and light installation consisting of four MIDI keyboards, each controlling one component, which enables the user to create video, sound and light combinations by accessing a pool of these components and mix them in new individual ways. After the presentation the participants are welcome to play with the compiler.

In her afternoon lecture Luba Lukova will discuss the wide range of her projects: from editorial illustrations to posters, books, and 3-dimensional installations. The visual presentation will include over 100 projects emphasising the role of the graphic metaphor and conceptual thinking. The artist will share her creative process and talk about the human aspect of her work.

The seminar is intended for anyone who works in the field of visual communications: graphic designers, students of fine arts, visual arts, graphic design and technical professions, typographers and industrial designers, architects and interior designers, illustrators, creative directors from advertising agencies, technical editors and printed media designers, graphic designers in publishing houses and repro studios, computer designers, designers of television graphics and web-sites as well as those who are in any way connected to the field of visual communications: PR employees, editors of printed and television media, reporters.

The seminar will take place on Tuesday, 15 and Wednesday 16 May 2007 at Garni Hotel, Miklosiceva 9, Ljubljana, between 09:30 and 16:30. The lectures will be held in English and will have no simultaneous translation.

The fee for the seminar is 384 EUR (incl. VAT) and 132 EUR (incl. VAT) for students.

cyan - Detlef Fiedler, born in 1955 in Sch nebeck (Germany), studied architecture in Weimar. Following his studies he worked as a gardener and later as a garden architect. He moved to eastern Berlin in 1987 where he worked as a graphic designer at the advertising agency DEWAG. In 1989 he and four other young designers founded Grappa, the first graphic design group in GDR.

cyan - Daniela Haufe, born in 1966 in Berlin (Germany), was trained as a manual typesetter and worked as a typographer at a state publishing house. In 1988 she started studying graphic design at the University of Applied Sciences in Berlin. She was strongly engaged in the civil movement for democracy. After the wall came down she cancelled her studies and joined the group Grappa.

In 1992 Daniela Haufe and Detlef Fiedler left Grappa to found cyan. Together with one to four other designers they create graphic design and corporate identity programs exclusively for cultural clients such as the Bauhaus Dessau, the State Opera Berlin, the House of World Cultures and various galleries. Between 1991 and 1995 they were the co-editors of the design critical magazine form+zweck (form+purpose). As members of the dance company Toula limnaios they created several films and videos that were projected on stage. Between 1996 and 2006 they were lecturers of graphic design at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig. In 2001 Haufe and Fiedler became members of the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI). They have been invited to exhibit their work and to give lectures and workshops worldwide.
