Alberta (Canada) - On May 3, 2002 the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada (GDC), at its National Annual General Meeting at the Rimrock Hotel in Banff, Alberta, honoured three female Canadian graphic designers with Fellowship status: Linda Coe of Vancouver, BC; Annie Re of Edmonton, AB; and Carole Charette of Quebec, QC. Only 8 other women have previously received this honour.

Fellowship is awarded by the National Society to a professional graphic designer who, by accomplishment or influence, has made a major contribution to graphic design in Canada. It is the highest honour that can be bestowed by the Society and has only been granted to 49 other individuals since 1960. The recipients this year were Linda Coe of Vancouver, BC; Annie Re of Edmonton, AB; and Carole Charette of Quebec, QC.

Linda Coe has been an active member of the GDC since 1975 and was President of the BC Chapter from 1989 to 1991. Her contributions at the committee and executive level over the years have helped to maintain continuity from one executive to another, as well as empowering many of the members of the BC design community through professional workshops, award shows and inspirational speaker events.

Annie Re has been an active member of the Alberta design community for many years. She was President of the Alberta Chapter from 1984 to 1985, National Secretary from 1985 to 1987, and Alberta North Secretary from 1998 to 2002. She has been involved with the Government of Alberta in establishing purchasing guidelines for government departments, and was also on the ISO Technical Committee on Public Information Symbols from 1990 to 1995.

Carole Charette was lauded for her infectious enthusiasm and boundless energy for design not only for Quebec designers, but designers across Canada. She has almost singlehandedly revived the SDGQ and kept it growing for the past ten years. Her continual communication and collaboration with the GDC have helped to recreate a truly national design community. The ripples from her contributions have been felt around the world.

The GDC1s mandate is to maintain a defined, recognized competent body of graphic designers and to promote high standards of graphic design for the benefit of Canadian industry, commerce, public service and education.

The GDC was founded in 1956, grew to become a national association by 1974 and was granted a Federal Charter in 1976. The GDC1s membership in the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (Icograda) affiliates the GDC with a world-wide organization of graphic designers and provides its members with the opportunity of international recognition and professional development.

There are currently over 1,611 members of the GDC in various Chapters across Canada, including 808 members (not including student members) in the Association of Registered Graphic Designers of Ontario (RGD Ontario). Graphic designers in the province of Quebec are represented by the Societe des Designers Graphiques du Quebec (SDGQ) which has 135 members.
