Brno (Czech Republic) - Founded in the same year as Icograda (1963), the Brno International Biennale of Graphic Design is one of the longest running events of its kind in the world. Held every other year in Brno, the second largest city in the Czech Republic, the event features two alternating themes. The first theme, which will be the focus of the 2006 Biennale, includes posters, corporate identity and advertising graphics; while the other theme, to be covered in 2008, includes graphic design and type in books, magazines, newspapers and new media.

Organised by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and the Moravian Gallery in Brno, in collaboration with the City of Brno, the Design Centre of the Czech Republic, the Brno Biennale Association, the Union of Visual Artists of the Czech Republic and the Brno House of Arts, the 22nd International Biennale of Graphic Design will be held from 13 June to 15 October 2006 with the deadline for entries being 15 January 2006.

Many renowned artists participate, but the Biennale is also open to young fledgling designers. The only priority is the quality of the work. There are usually about 3 000 works submitted from designers practicing in virtually every continent. Once the entries are selected, they are displayed for exhibition and judged by an International Jury, who determine the recipients of the Grand Prix, the main and special awards in each category and the Icograda Excellence Award. After the Biennale, a Critics Award is also awarded on the basis of votes placed by journalists and critics.
