Pretoria (South Africa) - Braam de Klerk, a fourth year Information Design student from the University of Pretoria received top honours at the annual Design Achievers award function held on 16 June in Kyalami. Braam developed a concept for Trans Trash, a bus service and a garbage removal system, effectively merging two separate services into one. Braam will attend a student workshop in Stuttgart, Germany, sponsored by the SABS Design Institute.

The adjudicators of the programme said that Braam is a winner because of his complete willingness to engage in dialogue with everyone around him. He is aware of his context as a South African designer and fully embraces the challenges while maintaining a highly professional standard.

Runner-up was Riaan Rhode, a visual communication student from the University of Stellenbosch. Riaan developed a concept to provide art training at disadvantaged schools. The art generated is used in a poster campaign to make the public aware of the learners needs. He receives an honorarium sponsored by Jacques Lange and an offer of mentorship. Jacques is a past winner of the Design Achievers initiative and is currently president of the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (Icograda) and co-chair of the International Design Alliance (IDA). Icograda is the world body for professional communication design representing more than 190 associations and institutions in 57 countries.

Three students each received awards from software company Adobe. They are Tennille Bergh, a Fashion Design student from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Mahlogonolo Moima, Graphic Design student from the Inscape Design College and Monique Petersen, Graphic Design student from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. This year is the 20 anniversary of the SABS Design Institute s Design Achievers initiative and it is celebrated throughout the country with 19 exhibitions in all nine provinces and a glossy book that was launched at the awards function on 16 June.

The Design Achievers Award was born of the belief that opportunities should be created for young designers to define the future and to prove that South Africa is a country with great creative potential. Design Achievers is a unique award scheme insofar as it not only recognises design talent, but also seeks out and awards leadership in design and entrepreneurial potential. The design leaders of tomorrow will be instrumental in promoting and stimulating our country s design and manufacturing industries
