DESIGN AUSTRIA AWARDS EXCELLENCE IN GRAPHIC DESIGN AND ILLUSTRATION

Vienna (Austria) - On 5 November 2004, Design Austria presented the award-winning entries and their designers of this year's Joseph Binder Award, Austria's only international design competition, in Vienna's Museums' Quarter. It was for the third time that the focus of the competition was on graphic design and illustration (the other disciplines being interior & environmental design, and digital & new media design). With almost 600 entries from 15 countries, participation in 2004 reached a record high. The shortlisted works will be presented in an exhibition at the headquarters of Design Austria in Vienna until 3 December 2004.
The prominent international jury, including, for example, poster designer Niklaus Troxler (Switzerland), communication designer Anna Berkenbusch (Germany) and e-boy illustrator Peter Stemmler (United States), shortlisted 52 entries, 30 of which received Merit Awards; 22 won a trophy in gold (3), silver (8), or bronze (11). The jury praised the excellent quality particularly in the disciplines of editorial design, poster, illustration, and design fiction (non-commissioned works).
The three gold trophies went to Lichtwitz Buro fur visuelle Kommunikation (Austria) for the magazine Link (Editorial Design), commissioned by the 2003 European Cultural Capital of Graz; to dasuno (Austria) for The Fantastic Shiny Paper Theatre (Illustration), a presentation portfolio for metallic papers; and to Katja Schwalenberg (Germany) for the non-commercial project Frau Wow (Design Fiction), a visual documentation of the stereotypes associated with the female gender. As a non-commissioned project, the latter was also awarded a money prize of 2,500 euros.
Three further entries in the Design Fiction category received money prizes: The 2nd prize (2,000 euros) went to Siena Jakobi (Hochschule fur Kunste Bremen, Germany) for the magazine So was kommt von so was, and two third prizes (750 euros each) to Anders Bergesen (Staatliche Akademie der bildenden Kunste Stuttgart, Germany) for the calendar Good/Bad and to Regula Schlappi and Andrea Stuker (Switzerland) for 3012 Bern, a neighbourhood guidebook with an integrated notepad.
Entrants winning multiple shortlistings include alessandri design (Austria) with altogether five projects (a bronze trophy and four merit awards), buro uebele visuelle kommunikation (Germany) with a silver and two bronze trophies, as well as with a merit award, Fons Hickmann m23 (Germany) with a bronze trophy and a merit award, and Werner Singer (Austria), also winning bronze and a merit award. In addition to its gold trophy, dasuno (Austria) also won silver for their illustrations for the CCA Annual 2003.
