Brussels (Belgium) - Australia's Monash University will be the home to some of the world's leading designer researchers in November, when it holds FUTUREGROUND 2004, an international design research conference endorsed by Icograda.* As well as featuring a wide range of speakers from the United Kingdom, Europe, the United States, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, FUTUREGROUND will also include an exhibition of some of the winning products from the 2004 Australian Design Awards. FUTUREGROUND 2004 will be held at Monash University from 17-21 November 2004. The programme will feature keynote, plenary and parallel paper presentations, exhibition and poster presentations and workshop events.

"FUTUREGROUND 2004 is the most significant international design conference to be held in Australia this year. It is an important event for designers of all disciplines," says Professor John Redmond, Foundation Dean of the Faculty of Art & Design at Monash University. International presenters include Dr David Durling, Director, Advanced Research Institute, Staffordshire University, UK and Prof. Dr. Richard Buchanan, Professor of Design, School of Design, Carnegie Mellon University, USA and President of the Design Research Society.

Heading the list of keynote speakers at FUTUREGROUND is Professor Mark Burry, the director of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology's state-of-the-art Spatial Information Architecture Laboratory, Visiting Professor at Liverpool University (UK), MIT (USA), and Honorary Professor at Deakin University (Australia). Professor Burry has published internationally on two main themes: the life and work of the architect Antoni Gaudi in Barcelona, and putting theory into practice with regard to 'challenging' architecture. He has also published widely on broader issues of design, construction and the use of computers in design theory and practice.

According to Professor Redmond, the range of topics and issues raised in the 300 papers currently being reviewed is an example of the diversity of current design research that is sure to advance the theory and practice of design in the future. "The FUTUREGROUND 2004 conference will draw the latest research from industrial, graphic, interior, fashion and furniture designers, architects and engineers. It will encourage further research in design and allow designers from all disciplines to understand more about design research and its relationship with education and practice," he said.
