Singapore - President S R Nathan presented Singapore's top design accolade to three outstanding designers and seven iconic designs at the President's Design Award ceremony held on 1 December 2008 at the LASALLE College of the Arts. Singapore's most prestigious design award recognises the ability of Singapore designers to create outstanding and iconic designs that push the boundaries of design and enhance lives.

Launched in 2005, the President's Design Award acknowledges Singapore designers' ability to develop innovative designs that have contributed to Singapore's economy, environment and culture. The Award is presented to designers and designs across all design disciplines.

"In these times of economic uncertainty, it has become even more imperative for businesses to leverage design to remain strong and competitive. I would like to congratulate the recipients of this year's Award. Their outstanding designs have enhanced Singapore's position as a design hub and deepen our design culture," said Dr Milton Tan, Director, .

Highlighting the importance of urban design in Singapore, Mrs Cheong Koon Hean, Chairperson, Architecture & Urban Design (A&UD) Jury Panel and Chief Executive Officer, Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) commented, "Urban design is about making connections between people and places, movement and urban form, nature and the built fabric. Singapore has succeeded in marrying architecture with sensitive urban design to capture the heart and soul of a place. This is what makes our city endearing to Singaporeans and visitors alike. This Award is also conferred on architects and designers whose bold and innovative designs have greatly enhanced our built environment. I congratulate them and look forward to more such groundbreaking works."

Administered by the DesignSingapore Council, Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts, and the Urban Redevelopment Authority, the Award has two categories. This year, awards have been presented to three Designers of the Year and seven Designs of the Year.

The jury panel, which consists of international and Singapore industry experts from different design disciplines, convened in Singapore to evaluate the submissions from 13 - 15 August 2008.

All three recipients of the Designer of the Year award are also eligible for the President's Design Award Grant that will allow them to undertake and fund a community-based design project that will have a positive impact on the community and/or environment across different disciplines and sectors. The Grant provides up to $50,000 for these recipients to further design in Singapore's everyday life through a myriad of possibilities.

The curated exhibition of the winning works from the President's Design Award will be held at The URA Centre from 3 December 2008 - 28 February 2009.
