Seoul (Korea) - The 2011 UNESCO Creative Cities Network Conference is taking place in Seoul from 16-17 November. The last two conferences took place in Santa Fe, United States (2008) and Shenzen, China (2010). This third conference is hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and UNESCO, the Korean National Commission for UNESCO and is being organised by the Seoul Design Foundation. The mayors and representatives of 29 Creative Cities in 19 countries will participate,  as well as domestic and international experts and specialists in creativity, including university students majoring in pertinent majors. ??

Under the theme of ‘Urban Development based on Creativity’, the conference will be a venue for experts in various fields to consider and develop measures about how cities can move forward and improve the quality of life for their citizens with creative industries. The main program of the conference will kick with the Opening Ceremony. Other events on the first day are the Annual Meeting of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network and a Plenary Session. On the second day, the Mayors’ Round Table and the Sub-committee Session will be held.

The keynote speech will be delivered by Professor John Rajchman, Department of Art History and Archaeology, Columbia University and a former professor at Princeton University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Rajchman is a world-renowned philosopher, famous for his critiques of architectures, art, design and the urban environment which he made in various articles and which also reveal themselves in the exhibition plans for prominent museums like the MoMA in New York and in the abstracts for diverse biennales. In the keynote speech entitled "Seoul-City of Dreams", he plans to express the great expectation he has for Seoul, representative of Korea, while emphasising the necessity to nurture philosophical, political and cultural power for the upcoming 5 to 10 years rather than just the next one or two.??

The theme of the Annual Meeting of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network is “Sustainable city development based on creativity.” The Meeting is composed of a panel discussion and expert presentation by Professor Soon-In Lee, President of the  and Icsid President.? ?

At the MayorsÂ’ Round Table, the Seoul Declaration will be adopted to ensure the continued cooperation among cities of UNESCO Creative Cities Network, contributions to the development of cities in the developing nations and the regular hosting of the MayorsÂ’ Round Table.

??In the Sub-committee Session, successful instances generated by the pursuit of specific businesses and policies will be presented for each session in seven creative areas: design, literature, gastronomy, crafts, media art, music and film and cooperative measures among creative cities will be discussed. In particular, this session is expected to stir up active communication about the Network by proposing cooperative inter-city businesses.
