Montreal (Canada) - During the Icograda General Assembly in Copenhagen, voting members of Icograda will be electing an Incoming Board of Directors for the 2005-2007 term. Though all nominees belong to Icograda Member Organizations, elected nominees will be sitting on the Board as individuals and not as representatives of their respective organisations. They will be joining the 2005-2007 Icograda President, Jacques Lange (DSA/think, South Africa), who was named President Elect at the 2003 General Assembly in Nagoya, Japan.

Don Ryun Chang (VIDAK, South Korea), Russell Kennedy (AGDA, Australia), Halim Choueiry (SPGIL, Lebanon), and Ruth Klotzel (ADG-Brasil, Brazil) are nominees that are currently sitting on the Icograda Board and thus may be already familiar to you.

Other nominees that you may not know yet include: Xavier Bermudez Banuelos (TV, Mexico), David Berman (GDC, Canada), Lise Vesje Klint (DD, Denmark), Veejay Archary (think, South Africa) and Richard Grefe (AIGA, United States).

In order to provide you with a sneak preview of possible directions for the two years ahead, we would like to introduce you to your Icograda Board Nominees:

Don Ryun Chang
Don Ryun Chang was born to diplomat parents and grew up on five continents: Asia, Europe, North and South America, and Africa. He was educated at the University of British Columbia in Canada, the Parsons School of Design, and received his MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. In addition to receiving numerous international awards and lecturing around the globe on branding, he has served as a Vice President of the Visual Information Design Association of Korea (VIDAK) and was the Executive Organizing Director for the 2000 Icograda Millenium Congress in Seoul. Don is seeking nomination as the Icograda President Elect for the 2005-2007 term. If elected, he plans to use his international experience, both as an educator and design professional, to assist Icograda Member Associations to evolve and be sustainable while facing the many challenges that currently confront the profession of graphic design.

Russell Kennedy
Russell Kennedy is currently Senior Lecturer and Course Coordinator of Visual Communications at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. Before joining Monash in 1994, he was the principle of Russell Kennedy Design, a corporate identity consultancy, and Co-Director of Onset Productions, a motion picture and documentary company. Russell will be seeking to continue his work on the Icograda Board as Vice President in charge of education. Serving another term will provide him with the opportunity to develop some exciting initiatives that are currently in the planning stage and which will contribute to expanding the Icograda Education Network (IEN) and to providing students with more opportunities for exchange and exposure.

Halim Choueiry
Originally from Lebanon, Halim Choueiry is a design educator and practitioner based in Qatar. In addition to running his own design studio, 'Cinnamon' , which specializes in cultural patterning identification, visual development of bilingual corporate identities and simultaneous typographic representation of Latin-based and Arabic languages, Halim is currently working on a PhD in Design at Brighton University in England. The recipient of several national and international design awards, he is dedicated to bringing about changes in the approach and look of graphic design in the Middle East and the Gulf Region. If re-elected to sit on the Board, he will focus on developing more collaboration between this region of the world and Icograda while encouraging the role of design as a catalyst for various issues relating to ethics, discrimination, culture, sustainability and the environment.

,strong>Ruth Klotzel
Born to European immigrant parents in Sao Paulo, Ruth Klotzel, spent several years of her childhood in Chicago and New York, and part of her adolescence in Italy. A graduate of the School of Architecture and Urbanism at Sao Paulo University, she is currently head of the design office, Estudio Infinito, a professor in visual communication at two colleges and one of the directors of Mundareu, a non-profit, fair-trade organization aiming to create income-generation activities for people otherwise excluded from the formal job market. She is also one of the co-founders and former directors of ADG-Brazil, the graphic design association of Brazil. Ruth would like to run for one more term in office in order to carry on with her work towards enabling Latin American designers to play a more active role in the global community.

Xavier Bermudez Banuelos
Born in Mexico City, Xavier Bermudez Banuelos is both a graphic designer and a musician. He studied Graphic Design at the Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana (UAM) in Mexico and the Scuola Politecnica de Design in Milan, Italy. In addition to leading a distinguished and very international academic career, Mr. Banuelos has been a pioneer in founding a publication (Via Libre) and several events (The International Poster Biennial in Mexico, for example) that have promoted graphic design internationally in addition to enhancing its status in specific areas of the world. He would like to participate in Icograda as a Board Member in order to create a deeper and stronger collaboration between Icograda and Latin American and Caribbean countries.

David Berman
David Berman has over 20 years of experience in graphic design and communications and has worked extensively in the adaptation of printed materials for electronic distribution. As National Ethics Chair for Graphic Design in Canada since 2002 and as the author of the Code of Ethics for the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada and the constitution and Rules of Professional Conduct for the Association of Graphic Designers of Ontario, David Berman, would like to serve on the Icograda Board as a passionate advocate of the stewardship role that visual communicators can play in helping to repair the world.

Lise Vesje Klint
Currently President of Danish Designers and a Board Member both of the Danish Art Foundation and the Danish Design School and thus coming from a multi-disciplinary background with a multi-disciplinary focus, Ms. Vesje's Klint, would like to serve on the Board in order to continue the work that has been started by the International Design Alliance (IDA). She believes in the potential of design as a key strategic tool for innovation and thus sees the need to consolidate the design process as a knowledge-based competence in order to attract the attention of business and political bodies. This, she argues, is done best in cooperation with all international design organizations.

Veejay Archeray
As the creator of some of the more memorable design moments in South Africa's democratic history including the new corporate identity for South African Airways and the imagery and identity for the first Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Veejay Archary, would like to serve on the Icograda Board as an ambassador for the African continent. He would like to ensure that Africa has not only a voice, but the integrity and capability to create a contemporary and authentic identity.

Richard Grefe
Richard Grefe's experience is in the development of institutions that serve social purposes. His passion is design. A humanist and internationalist, he has lived in Munich, Bristol (England), Lausanne, Manila, Ho Chi Minh City, New York, San Francisco and Washington. He would like to join the Icograda Executive Board in order to find possible ways to begin to integrate the US design community more fully into the global community of designers. He believes that while there are deep pools of energy, inspiration and knowledge in the US design profession which can be shared with colleagues around the world, there is an even more critical need for US designers to learn from designers elsewhere, particularly by gaining the personal understandings of seeing communication from different cultural perspectives.
