Ljubljana (Slovenia) - Icograda IDMN member Emzin will present a seminar 15-16 May 2012 in the City Museum of Ljubljana, Gosposka 15, Ljubljana, from 9:30-17:00. Lectures will be held in English and will have no simultaneous translation. The fee for the seminar is 200 EUR (VAT excluded), and 50 EUR (VAT excluded) for students.

The first day of the seminar, Tuesday 15 May 2012, will be devoted to Gordon Young (United Kingdom, gordonyoung.net), one of the UK’s leading artists in the field of public art, and Spanish visual activist Gabriel Freeman (Spain, lsdspace.com, unmundofeliz2.blogspot.com). Gordon Young will present his project The Comedy Carpet (2011) – a typographical pavement installed in the seaside resort of Blackpool in collaboration with the design studio Why Not Associates. The 2200 m2 work of art contains over 160 000 granite letters embedded into concrete. In his lecture How to be a bastard pop designer? the second speaker of the day Gabriel Freeman will present the position of a bastard pop designer who still possesses the energy to question his position in the world and create protest design.

The second day of the seminar, Wednesday 16 May 2012, lectures will be held by the French master of poster design Alain Le Quernec (France, alainlequernec.fr) and Serbian graphic designer and visual artist Slavimir Stojanoviã (Serbia, slavimir.com). Alain Le Quernec will speak about graphic design and advertising as two faces of communication which do not share the same values and develop different languages. This explains why his work is still politically, socially and culturally engaged, and why it excludes advertising. The lecture by Slavimir Stojanoviã will give an insight into his Futro - Premium Art Brand on its way from the beginnings to the shelves of global centres such as Centre Pompidou in Paris and Moma Design Store in New York. The author will speak about the thin line between art and design, and application of graphic elements to useful objects.

About the speakers

Gordon Young (1952) studied in Coventry in the 1970s under Terry Atkinson (as Art & Language came to prominence) and later at the Royal College of Art in London. He was curator at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and Director of the Welsh Sculpture Trust before becoming a full-time artist. Gordon has been working in the public realm for over 20 years creating works that mine rich seams of social history, engage communities and extend the relationships between art and architecture.

Gabriel Freeman (1967) has a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Salamanca. He studied philosophy and has lectured at the School of Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Madrid and the Fine Arts School of Salamanca University. He is professor at the ESD/Madrid. Together with Sonia Freeman they head the visual activist group Un Mundo Feliz and are members of the studio LSDspace.

Alain Le Quernec (1944) studied in Paris to become an art teacher (1965). In the meantime he practised poster design, completely self-taught. His first poster was printed in 1962. Being in love with Polish posters, he stopped teaching for one year to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw with Professor Henryk Tomaszewski.

Slavimir Stojanoviã (1969) is a graphic designer, a visual artist working under the alias Slavimir Futro, partner at Designis, design and branding agency, creative director at Communis DDB and creator of Futro - Premium Art Brand. He studied at High School of Design in Belgrade, at the Academy for Applied Arts and Design and at HDK in Gothenburg, Sweden.
