MINISTRY OF CULTURE IN THE SLOVAK REPUBLIC ANNOUNCES PLAN TO CLOSE DOWN SLOVAK DESIGN CENTRE

Bratislava (Slovak Republic) - Members and supporters of the Slovak Design Centre (SDC) recently issued a letter expressing their deep concerns about the Ministry of Culture's surprise decision to close their institution as of 1 January 2006. Because there were no public consultations on this matter previous to the announcement, the Slovak design community is still reeling from its possible repercussions and has launched a call for support from the international design community.
A member of Icograda, Icsid, and BEDA, the SDC has been the only supporting institution for design in the Slovak Republic for the past 15 years. Included in its portfolio are many important activities aimed at enhancing the practice of design: the Designmum magazine and other publications, the National Prize for Design Biennial, exhibitions such as the Design Forum and Bookmark, the Trnava Poster Triennial and others.
Because the Slovak Design Centre would like to open discussions with the Ministry of Culture in order to defend its existence as the only support organization for the development, research, history and theory of Slovakian design, it is asking all sister institutions and persons from abroad to send their opinion about the planned closing to Frantisek Toth, the Minister of Culture, at the coordinates given below.
