Torino (Italy) - Multiverso: Icograda Design Week Torino 2008 is quickly approaching. As part of this event, from 13-19 October 2008, students and young professionals are invited to participate in a series of workshops, led by industry professionals from around the world. Sophie Thomas and Saki Mafundikwa are two of the four workshop leaders.

Sophie Thomas: Minus 99 months
Leading climate scientists say we have less than 8 years to change the way we live our lives in order to avoid the ultimate discaster. The situation calls for radical communication that does not use our existing models for selling or informing but for bold and compelling messages that urge the population to mobilise and act together.

If you want to know what a communication designer can do to help save our world, join Sophie's workshop. It will push designers to create a one off piece/ design/ happening/ event that can be physically created in the public domain that will make the public of the city stop and think and change their ways.

Participants must not be afraid to work outside the restraints of the graphic design studio, must not be afraid to take risks, must understand climate change and have watched 'an inconvenient truth' or '11th hour' or 'the story of stuff' or all of them, must feel strongly about changing the world or want to know more, and must like to create.

About Sophie
Over the past ten years, as a director and joint owner of thomas.matthews Sophie has led and delivered a vast array of award winning projects across the world. Through her work and writing she has strived to practice the agencies ‘ten ways design can fight climate change’ which are now seen globally as essential guiding principles to sustainable design. Sophie plays a vocal part in promoting sustainable thinking in design and is a co-founder of the new social enterprise ‘Three Trees Don’t Make a Forest’, set up to offer inspiration and tools to communication designers and people who work in design with the aim to push for a zero carbon design industry.

Saki Mafundikwa: Afrikan Alphabets
This is a workshop for students who love typography and the aim is to open their world up to a different take on type (writing) through the introduction of writing systems as a source of typographical inspiration. A great deal of time is required for this workshop, as the subject requires substantial research and reading.

About Saki
A graphic designer, typographer and design educator, Saki was born and raised in Zimbabwe. In 1979, he went to Indiana University to study Fine Arts and Telecommunications. He then graduated at Yale University with an MFA in Graphic Design in 1985. It was there that he discovered the existence of sub-Saharan scripts and alphabets designed by Afrikans themselves – without the influence of the Roman or Arabic alphabets. This became his Master’s thesis, developed into a life-long passion and, after more research, almost twenty years later has turned into the book Afrikan Alphabets: The Story of Writing in Afrika.

He worked as a designer and Art Director in New York from 1985 through 1997 when he decided to return home to found his countryÂ’s first Graphic Design and New Media college, the Zimbabwe Institute of Vigital Arts (ZIVA). Saki Mafundikwa has participated in exhibitions and workshops in Europe and USA and written numerous essays and articles on design for publications around the world. He has also travelled widely in North and South America, the Caribbean, Europe and Afrika lecturing about his ideas for the globalization of design and design education.
