Essen (Germany) - It was a worthy highlight and end of this year's red dot award: communication design - the festive awards ceremony on Friday 8 December 2006 in the Essen Philharmonic Concert Hall, which was attended by some 800 guests from eight nations to celebrate the winners of this year's red dot award: communication design. The tension with regards to the honorary prizes for the best works of each category, however, kept mounting during the ceremony, because the winners were not announced until the very end of the awards presentation.

red dot: junior prize for 'Erdzeiten - Atlas der Pal ogeografie'
The 'red dot: junior prize' worth 10,000 euros for the best student work went to the three young designers Cornelia Vogt, Violetta Walter and Martin Gorka from Offenbach for their work 'Erdzeiten - Atlas der Pal ogeografie' ('Times of the Earth - Atlas of Palaeogeography'). The detailed atlas managed to prevail against four other nominated works. Professor Dr. Zec, initiator of the red dot design award, commented on the atlas, "This work is outstanding, not least thanks to its complexity. The concept and the design convey the wealth of information in an uncomplicated way and present the earth as a moving, living planet. We would like this prize to be regarded as a prize to support young professionals and we hope to see much more of these young designers in
future."

red dot: grand prix awarded six times
This year, the red dot: grand prix was for the first time awarded in several categories. The work 'Happy World, Best World International Limited Annual Report 2005/2006' by Epigram from Singapore won the red dot: grand prix as the best work in the category Corporate Design. Atelier Bruckner received the red dot: grand prix in the category Informational Design/Public Space for their 'Tatort Forscherlabor' ('Crime Scene Research Laboratory'), 'Nano Maca' won in the category Packaging and the 'Metropolitan World Atlas' in the category Editorial. The agency Neue Digitale received the red dot: grand prix for their interactive website 'adidas Sport Style Y-3' in the category Interactive Media, and the poster series 'Amsterdam Sinfonietta' by Studio Dumbar from The
Netherlands won in the category Posters.

For the festive presentation of certificates and trophies Professor Dr. Peter Zec welcomed the designers Kirsten Dietz and Jean Jacques Schaffner as well as Oscar winner Tyron Montgomery on stage, who presented the winners with their certificates and prizes on behalf of this year's expert jury. The jazz pianist Joachim K hn provided the fantastic musical programme which was emphasised by the impressive acoustics of the Philharmonic Concert Hall.

After the awards presentation the festivities continued at the opening of the special exhibition in the red dot design museum, where winners and guests celebrated into the early hours at the 'Late Night Party'.

Special exhibition and yearbook
The special exhibition 'red dot award: communication design 2006', which
presents all the award-winning works of the competition, will be on display in the red dot design museum until 7 January 2007.

Just in time for the award ceremony the 'red dot communication design
yearbook 2006/2007' has been published. The yearbook has become an
established reference work of current design. This year, the yearbook features a new layout concept and extra contents such as designer profiles and descriptions of the best works and will for the first time be published by the in- house publishing company red dot edition.
