Brussels (Belgium) - The organisers of the 21st International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno 2004 have announced the winners of the biennial competition. The competition received 2,000 works submitted by 320 artists from 36 countries. In February 2004, the pre-selection committee chose a total of 280 exhibits by 120 designers and creative teams from 26 countries, the largest collections being from Czech Republic (39 designers and creative teams), Japan (23), and Austria (8). The International Jury finalised its decision after examining the exhibited works at the Museum of Applied Arts and the Governor's Palace, Moravian Gallery in Brno, Czech Republic.

The Members of the International Jury of the 21st International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno 2004 were: Ruedi Baur, Chair (Switzerland/France); Julia Hasting, Vice-Chair (Germany/USA), Peter Biak (Slovak Republic/The Netherlands), Keizo Matsui (Japan), Ales Najbrt (Czech Republic), Stefan Sagmeister (Austria/USA), Frantisek Storm (Czech Republic). Marek Pokorny, director of the Moravian Gallery in Brno, was also present at the jury deliberations on 13 June 2004.

Having thoroughly examined all the exhibited works, the Jury awarded the prizes on the basis of an assessment of the artistic and functional merits of the works. During its deliberations, the jury noted that the 21st Brno Biennial 2004 represents a selection of world art production, and that it continues to attract a broad range of designers.

The Brno Biennial, established in 1963 and now held every even year, is a unique show of contemporary world graphic design and work, much of which has provided fresh creative input and stimuli in the sphere of visual communication in the course of the past four years. The chief organisers of the 21st Brno Biennial are the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and the Moravian Gallery. Also involved in the organisation of the Brno Biennial are the Design Centre of the Czech Republic, the Brno House of Arts, the Brno Biennial Association and the Union of Visual Artists of the Czech Republic. The event is supported by the Southern Moravia Region and the Statutory City of Brno, and is endorsed by Icograda.
