Johannesburg (South Africa) - Paper-giant Sappi, the world's leading producer of coated woodfree, fine paper, recently announced its commitment to be the major sponsor of internationally-attended design event, the Sappi World Design Convergence 2001.

The design festival, to be held in mid-September in Johannesburg, South Africa, promises to be Africa's biggest ever gathering of international designers under one roof. It includes the parallel running of the world congresses and general assemblies of both Icograda (International Council of Graphic Design Associations), and the IFI (International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers).

The first multidisciplinary Design Africa Trade Expo, organised by Kagiso Exhibitions also takes place at Sappi World Design Convergence and will showcase African and international design products and services.

Hank Mollenhauer, Marketing and Sales - Director of Sappi Fine Paper plc, comments that the sponsorship of this major event on the design industry calendar, has much to do with Sappi's extension of its traditional role of being the manufacturer of fine quality paper. Sappi wants to support designers who create the messages and images that are delivered by Sappi paper all over the world.
"Sappi's goal is to add significant value to end users and designers in the creative industry," he says. "The World Design Convergence 2001 event is the perfect vehicle to do this, allowing us to play a role in the continued development of the design industry."

Graphic design is an area, which adds significant value to Sappi's business, and as such, it is an area to which the company is strongly committed through various initiatives.

"Sappi has always been close to the design industry, helping designers realise the full potential of their work through recommending and supplying the right fine quality paper for the job," says Mollenhauer. "We believe that our involvement with World Design Convergence 2001 will help further strengthen this partnership."

The paper producer, which produces such well-known coated paper brands as Magno, HannoArt, Uni, Royal, Somerset, Lustro, Strobe and Empress, hopes ultimately to contribute to the development of the design profession, and the empowerment of designers in the supply chain.

As a global, listed company, Sappi certainly has the presence needed to make such a contribution.

Originally a South African based company, Sappi is active today in the global market, with paper mills on three continents, and a customer base spanning over 100 countries.

It produces over 5 million tons of paper and 3 million tons of pulp a year, at modern, low-cost manufacturing facilities, five of which are amongst the top twenty most productive fine paper machines in the world.

Sappi specialises in making coated papers that are specifically designed for the production of annual reports, calendars, promotional brochures, magazines, catalogues, labels, posters and high quality books.

Product and technological innovation are the foundation of Sappi's business. Three research and development facilities strive continuously to develop new products and improved processes for the group.

Sappi is also environmentally conscious, as manufacturing paper with care for its impact is entrenched within Sappi's operational policies. It uses internationally recognised environmental management systems such as ISO 14001 to ensure minimum impact on the local environment, and is continually striving to improve its environmental performance.
