Johannesburg (South Africa) - South African publisher Interactive Africa swept the boards with its meticulous, state-of-the-art Design Indaba Magazine, printed on Sappi's Avalon Supreme Matt, at the prestigious Eddie and Ozzie Awards announced as part of the Folio: New York Show, recently held in New York, United States.

"Design Indaba notched up several firsts for South African publishing this year, both locally and internationally," said Albert Lubbe, managing director of Sappi Fine Paper South Africa.

Design Indaba is the first South African magazine to win the Ozzie Award for Best Overall Design and the first to achieve a Silver Ozzie Award in the Business-to-Business (under 100,000 print run) category. The magazine topped off its string of successes by scooping the Gold Eddie Award in the Business-to-business Art/Design Category.

"The Eddies are a unique competition in which magazines are evaluated against their own mission statement, the quality of the content and how the overall design and production supports their mission. Rather than positioning each title against the competition," said Lubbe.

"This is an outstanding achievement for South African paper, publishing and printing. Design Indaba is printed on Sappi Fine Paper South Africa's premier coated sheetfed grade - Avalon Supreme Matt - 230g/m sq. for the cover and 115g/m sq. for the text of the publication. Avalon is produced by Sappi's Stanger Mill in the KwaZulu Natal region of South Africa from sugar cane waste or bagasse."

Lubbe elaborated: "Earlier this year, Design Indaba walked away with Sappi Pica Awards for Innovation in Magazine Publishing, and the best publication in the Entertainment and Arts category.

"Sappi Fine Paper is a strong supporter of the local publishing, printing and design communities. Our association as a prominent sponsor of Design Indaba, a global showcase bringing together South African and global designers, is but one example of this support. Over the past eight years, Design Indaba has become a global showcase and has established South African design on the international stage," concluded Lubbe.

Design Indaba 9 takes place from 23 to 25 February 2005 at the Cape Town Convention Centre, Cape Town, South Africa.
