Montreal (Canada) - The International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) is pleased to announce that Professor Carlos Hinrichsen, Convenor of the Icsid Senate and Director of the DuocUC School of Design in Santiago, Chile, has been honoured with the distinction of "Commander of the Order of the Lion of Finland". Her Excellency the President of Finland, Ms. Tarja Halonen, awarded this honour to Prof. Hinrichsen in recognition of his valuable contribution to the development of design education, innovation and advocacy in Chile and Finland, along with the dedication he has shown in facilitating collaboration between the two countries. The insignia of the Commander of the Order of the Lion of Finland was presented to Mr. Hinrichsen on 8 July by the Ambassador of Finland in Chile, Mr. Iivo Salmi, in a ceremony held at DuocUC's San Carlos de Apoquindo Campus in Santiago.

"It is truly an honour and a privilege for me to receive this award," stated Prof. Hinrichsen. "I view this recognition as a symbol that the work we have been doing at DuocUC has been a success. Over the past 17 years we have been committed to building cross-cultural opportunities for students, instructors and designers and I am greatly humbled that Finland, a country defined by its leadership and innovation in design, has bestowed this honour upon me."

The Order of the Lion of Finland was founded in 1942 and is responsible for awarding civilian and military excellence in developing political, economic or cultural relations between Finland and other nations. The prestigious distinction of Commander of the Order of the Lion of Finland is the third highest class in the order and is rarely bestowed upon a non-Finnish citizen.

Prof. Hinrichsen has been a professor and Director of the School of Design at DuocUC since 1992 and an active Icsid Board Member from 2001-2009, in which he served as President during the 2007-2009 term. Throughout his career, Prof. Hinrichsen has been a pioneer in design education and cross-cultural communication, having actively promoted and participated in collaborations between South America and the global design community. Whether establishing projects to connect and strengthen regional industrial design communities or directing initiatives that focus on innovation in design education, Prof. Hinrichsen has been a longstanding ambassador for the advancement of the South American design industry.

A previous recipient of the honour is famed Japanese industrial designer Mr. Kenji Ekuan, Icsid President from 1975-1977 and current member of the Icsid Senate.
